Flyer Profile: Wade Ogle

January 26, 2008 3:11 pm · By Dustin · 2 Comments

Wade Ogle has seen it all when it comes to the Fayetteville underground music scene. His former bands the Faith Healers and Dali Automatic (basically the same band, different name) were central to one of it’s high points in the late 80’s, early 90’s.

Later, he fronted Honey Died, and then the Delta Spacemen to similar success in the late 90’s until in 2000 Wade stopped playing music, at least publicly, altogether.

Even when Wade was on hiatus from playing, he was booking shows as co-owner of local venues JR’s Lightbulb Club, and the Dickson St. Theatre. Jr’s Lightbulb Club closed in August 2005, but Wade continues to host shows at the Dickson St. Theatre on weeknights.

In 2007, after nearly seven years, Wade returned to the studio and released the “Fort Destroyer” demos, mostly as an online release. He is currently in the studio working on a full length, due out this spring ‘08.

Wade was kind enough to answer some questions for us as well. You can check out a track from Fort Destroyer below, or you can download them all by checking out his myspace page.

Fayetteville Flyer: What have you been listening to lately?

Wade Ogle: I saw an Arcade Fire concert on Austin City Limits recently that I really liked. The last, truly great record I bought was Antony & The Johnson’s “I Am A Bird Now”. My 5yr old daughter Lily loves Joan Jett so I have to hear “I Love Rock N’ Roll” about 20 times a day.

FF: Who are some of the better bands you’ve seen come through Fayetteville?

WO: So many over the years. 20 plus years now of being right in the thick of it all. Flaming Lips in ‘88, Fugazi at Studio 225, White Stripes at JR’s on 9/11 are a few.

FF: Who are some of the better bands from Fayetteville, past or present?

WO: Faith Healers / Dali Automatic, Punkinhead, Jesus Lee Jones and Blue Boy Orliss and the Stompers from the 87-94 era. No local scene has ever compared to those times. Later on, The Good Fear…fantastic. I recently played on a show with Benjamin Del Shreve’s band. It reminded me of the old days. They were damn good live.

FF: What’s your favorite venue? (this is probably a no brainer, but I’ve gotta ask)

WO: The original JR’s Lightbulb Club will always be my favorite local venue. People thought we (Benton & I) made a hasty decision to close it. We didn’t. We battled with the idea for over a year despite the fact that we were routinely losing money and had families to feed. If the local underground scene ever grows any real legs, we’ll be the first to entertain the idea of doing it again.

FF: How’s the record coming along?

WO: Really good. I’ve recorded all the “song structure” parts and am now really excited to start putting icing on the cake.
I’m looking at an early spring release.

FF: How do you perceive the “scene” in Fayetteville?

WO: I don’t think there is one. There’s cool things going on but there’s no central venue, no guaranteed support from people who want to be a part of something important. I’m not complaining… that’s just how I see it. Then again, I’m nearing 44 years of age. I’m not supposed to know what the f*ck is going on.

FF: Which of your former bands do you feel was the best?

WO: Faith Healers / Dali Automatic. Essentially the same band…just a name change later on. We toured extensively, made records, put on amazing live shows. 7 years in a van will make you really good.

FF: Which did you enjoy playing in the most?

WO: Faith Healers / Dali Automatic. Some of the best times in my life.

We’re glad you’re back Wade. It seems like after a long lull, the scene in Fayetteville is starting to rebuild itself from the ground up. Even without a traditional venue to showcase some of the better new acts, there are signs of life to the scene sprouting from some unlikely places, and it can only be a good sign that one of the originators of the Fayetteville underground scene is back playing music again.
