Flyer Profile: The Dinosaur House

January 29, 2008 8:08 am · By Dustin · 0 Comments

The Dinosaur House is one of Fayetteville’s more unique venues. First of all, it’s not a venue in the traditional sense of the word. It’s a house, a yellow one to be exact, on the corner of Meadow and Locust St. downtown.

It’s the home of craft night. A home away from home for touring acts. The only place in town that hosts breakfast shows.

For the most part, the Dinosaur House doesn’t do a lot of loud, late night shows. They specialize in the lower decibel variety. Here’s the disclaimer from their Myspace page:

“We can’t do super-loud shows, but if you’re a super-loud band, we can help you find someone who can accommodate you. We also don’t do very many shows a month, so don’t be offended if we don’t set one up. We stay alive by playing dead a little.”

The Dinosaur house is basically a three person operation. Amy does all the booking and hospitality now. Justin does the “I’m sober and no one else is” thing, and Sam makes chili and provides all the music connections.

“And I’d also like to thank Myspace.” Amy says.

Amy and Justin answered some questions for us, and for that, we are very thankful.

Fayetteville Flyer: What kind of house are you, anyway?

Amy: We’re a married house, an earlier-to-bed-than-most house, but one that likes quiet shows and people from out of town. We also have a dog.

FF: Who are your favorite Fayetteville bands?

Justin: We love you all the same.

FF: What are you listening to lately?

Amy: David Byrne, M.I.A., Mary Timony, Paula Abdul.
Justin: Robert Wyatt, Beirut, Tim Hecker, Kiila, Dengue Fever.

FF: What kind of crafts come out of craft night?

Amy: Tiny hats for the Arkansas Children’s hospital, snow-globes, cheap screen-printing, and turning modest t-shirts into tight mini-skirts.

FF: 80’s era Sting, eh?

Justin: Amy’s crushing on Sting, but it’ll only work with a time machine.

FF: How do you perceive the Fayetteville music scene?

Amy: Well, we’ve been going to bed pretty early lately, and don’t really go to bars, so… We think shows start too late. For the rest of town, it seems like despite the death of JR’s and the DST’s lack of interest in music that doesn’t bring bros, people are making things happen despite having the real estate to do it like it was. New house venues are popping up, George’s is diversifying– I think it’s great. Maybe we’ll drink some coffee and try to stay up past 10pm sometime.

You can check out upcoming shows at the Dinosaur house in the Local Events Calendar.

Thanks for doing what you do, guys. You rule.

Mmmmm…cranberry muffins and soy-bacon. Delicious.

And uhhh, Amy, I seem to remember running into you at Maxine’s the other night….so apparently you do “really go to bars”.

Seriously though, these are really cool people who have been very hospitable to a schlep like me.

Wee! Thank you for the article. You’ve made our laziness about going outside our house look like philanthropy.
