Fayetteville Proposes Free Parking to Fuel Efficient Cars
The Off Street Parking District Board voted in favor of a new ordinance that would allow cars that average over 40 miles per gallon to park for free at meters and city lots in downtown Fayetteville.
The idea is that this will be incentive for Fayettevillians to buy fuel efficient vehicles.
Vehicles who qualify would apply for a permit through the city, pay $30 for the permit, and park for free for a year.
Some limitations to the free parking include meters near Fayetteville’s city administration building on Mountain Street are excluded from the proposal, as are time-limited areas like the 2-hour parking around the square. The proposal will not apply to motorcycles or scooters, which doesn’t make that much sense since those vehicles are generally more fuel efficient than any hybrid on the market.
The Fayetteville City Council still has to approve the measure, so don’t get your hopes up. Or do. See if we care. (We don’t)

motorcycles and scooters left out? bull****. they should only hope we had more 2 wheel vehicles filling in the residual spaces in the urban areas. i constantly fight this battle on the square. the city even recently wasted taxpayer money to put giant ‘no parking’ labels on the residual spaces left at the end of the meters at the top of block street. those were my goldmine spots on my motorcycle. they would rather i take up an entire parking space than fit in where i can get in. i would have gladly covered the cost of the extra letters to go from ‘no parking’ to ‘motorcycle parking’. emails to the mayor and transportation department only elicited some nonessential responses.

oh and i hope this is needless to say, but i am clearly all for the free parking program…props to the city if this goes through.

My car might count since it’s a 4 cylinder, but I’m not going to pay $30 bones. And PS, you can’t call paying $30 “free.”

I have a hybrid and I’d do it.
