Fayetteville’s Bestest: Burgers

In an effort to better serve you, the ever-dedicated Fayetteville Flyer patrons, we present “Fayetteville’s Bestest.” By using the powerful combination of opinion and mathematics, “Fayetteville’s Bestest” will fill you in on what’s awesome in the Fayetteville area. Our entire writing staff is given a subject (best place in F-Ville for sushi, to get your car repaired or to buy books. Anything) and then told to pick their top three favorites. The subsequent list of favorites is then compiled into one “super list,” taken out for a nice steak dinner, tattooed, challenged to a game of horseshoes and then presented to you, our faithful readers.

In our last edition we awarded Hogwild Pizza the highly prestigious “Fayetteville’s Bestest” award for best pizza in town. In this edition, we’ve moved on to a newer and equally as important topic: Burgers.

We. Love. Burgers. Anyone in their right mind loves a good burg. If you don’t like a delicious burger, there’s something wrong with you. That’s a scientific fact. But who cooks up and cranks out the best patty in Fayetteville? Lucky for you we’ve got the answer.

Without further ado, here it is – Fayetteville’s Bestest Burger according to the Fayetteville Flyer:

#1 – Hugo’s

Mary mother of Moses! This one wasn’t even close. In a landslide victory, we dub Hugo’s as having the best burger around. Period! It doesn’t matter if you rock the blue moon burger, a veggie burger, a cheddar burger, a guac burger, a chili burger or just a plain hamburger; You taste buds are guaranteed to savor the most delicious burger treat ever. If you like a good burger and haven’t tried a Hugo’s burg, you need to make a special trip to the tucked away restaurant and see just what all the hype’s about.

#2 – Art’s Place

Taking the runner-up spot is Art’s Place on College. Don’t let the Hugo’s landslide victory fool you into thinking that you shouldn’t go anywhere else for a burger. That would be unfortunate for you. Simply put; Art’s is awesome. Yeah, you’ll reek of cigarette smoke for the rest of the day, but that $5 bacon burger basket (complete with fries and beer!) makes up for it, ten-fold. As an added bonus, your waitress will most likely be cussing when she takes your order. F’ing sweet!

#3 – Brenda’s Bigger Burgers

Greasetastic and delicious. There’s no telling if or when they’ll be open, but if you’re fortunate enough to catch them when they are, then you, my friend, are in for a treat! I don’t care if it’s raining or if it’s -42 degrees out; If Brenda’s is open and you’re in the mood for a good burger, it’s worth the trip/waiting outside for your order. It’s hard to put your finger on, but there’s just something magical about this place. Give it a go sometime and judge for yourself.

Others: (4) Greenhouse Grill, (5) Red Robin, (5) Braum’s, (6) Grub’s, (7) Herman’s

Points Breakdown:
24 – Hugo’s
13 – Art’s Place
7 – Brenda’s Bigger Burgers
5 – Greenhouse Grill
3 – Red Robin
3 – Braum’s
1 – Grub’s
1 – Herman’s

How it’s scored: Each writer gets three votes. First place earns 3 points, second earns 2 and thirds brings in 1. The totals are calculated and the winner of the most points takes first place. Easy.

We’d like to take this opportunity to recognize and pay our respects to some good burger places that are no longer with us. R.I.P.

  • Hoffbrau
  • ROTC (On Dickson)
  • D-Lux

We’d also like to give a few honorable mentions since some places weren’t fortunate enough to get voted into anyone’s top 3:

  • Mr. Burger
  • Urban Table

If you’re curious on how our writers voted and why, keep on reading.

JTrain:

  1. Brenda’s Bigger Burger – While their hours of operation are consistently inconsistent, their burgs are consistently 100% delicious. That’s a fact. Paired up with their very tasty fries, Brenda’s is THE place to get a delicious burg in Fayetteville.
  2. Hugo’s – Bleu Moon burger = Heaven on a beef patty. Don’t believe me? Just try it for yourself and you’ll become a believer.
  3. Art’s Place – If you don’t mind smelling like cigarette smoke for the rest of the day, stop by Art’s over your lunch break and rock a burger. The burgers are always good and are served with a side of expertly crafted and somehow appropriate cuss words from the wait staff. If you go on Friday at lunch, make sure to get the basket deal: Burg, Fries and Mug of Beer for $5. Life doesn’t get much better than that, my friends.

TomForth:

As a vegetarian, this question is a bit difficult to answer “correctly.” I guess I’m going to judge my answers based on the best veggie burgers.

  1. Hugo’s – I’m pretty sure that the preparation for the veggie burgers at Hugo’s involves the step “just add water”. The burger’s prefab provenance aside, Hugo’s still manages to kick out the tastiest and most substantial veggie burger in town. The only drawback is that fries don’t come with, so you have to order them as a side–something I’ve always thought was pretty lame. That is easily forgiven, however, considering the low prices and the awesome atmosphere.
  2. Greenhouse Grille – The GHG serves up a pretty tasty black bean burger… they lose some points for serving their burgers with fancy-schmancy sweet potato fries, though.
  3. Grub’s – Tasty veggie burgers…bad atmosphere.

Strokitecture:

  1. Hugo’s – Guac or blue or cheddar or plain. simply the best fat burgers in Fayetteville.
  2. Brenda’s Bigger Burger – It’s bigger and it’s better than almost anyone else’s…and greasier too. Oh, and her building rocks.
  3. Herman’s – Ground steak burger, if it is actually still available by the time you arrive…magnificent.

Dern:

  1. Hugo’s- They have the best cheddar in the world as hell.
  2. Art’s
  3. Brenda’s

Farrah:

  1. Hugo’s: 3 words – Bleu Moon Burger. Absolute perfection. Always cooked to order and always delicious. Also my number one favorite place to eat in Fayetteville.
  2. Red Robin
  3. Art’s

SG:

  1. Hugo’s :: Blue Moon Burger is where it’s at. Really, it’s easily the best burg in town since all of the old staples are gone. And honestly, I don’t even order burgers anywhere else in Fayetteville.
  2. D-Lux
  3. ROTC (On College)

The Steve:

  1. Art’s: It’s gross, it’s greasy, it’s cheap, it’s delicious. I
don’t know what it is about their burgers that make them so delicious
(maybe it’s the pitcher of beer that comes with it on Friday
afternoons?) but they are my unrivaled #1.
  2. Hugo’s
  3. Brenda’s

Squidge:

  1. Art’s Place: I don’t care how smoky it is in that bar, the bacon cheeseburger is so worth it! And I think the burger basket is only, like, $4 or $5 bones. It’s tasty and not hard on the wallet either.
  2. Hugo’s: My personal favorite is the Smokey Cheddar Burger, but I’ll eat any burger or sandwich this establishment comes up with. So yummy!
  3. Braum’s: I know you think it’s for truckers and Okies, but the Braum’s burgers are gigantic and sure to soothe any hangover pains. Don’t dog it till you’ve tried it.

Jarsh:

  1. Art’s – I’m sure the last place most people would want to go to get the best burger in town is to a smoky bar on College Avenue. However, I can assure you it’s well worth it. If you want the full experience, go on a Friday afternoon and get the Bacon Burger Special which comes with fries and a cold draft beer for about $5.
  2. Hugo’s – Thank you baby Jesus for the Blue Moon, Smoky Cheddar and Chili burgers at Hugo’s. I owe you one.
  3. Red Robin – The Banzai Burger is so good that my mouth is watering just thinking about it. Not exaggerating.

Trisarahtops:

  1. Greenhouse Grille’s Free Range Buffalo Burger – This is the $10 burger your heart attack warned you about. Juicy seasoned patty, plus bacon, plus sautéed bacon, plus pepperjack OR for .50 more, goat cheese. GOAT CHEESE. And, if you have any room left in your arteries to eat the side dish, it’s sweet potato fries! Killer.
  2. Braum’s: Y’all don’t even know.
  3. Hugo’s: I guess.

You all should try the Kosmos Greek burger, it’s incredible. It was recommended to me by Zack Wait, I thought he was crazy (he is) but he was right on the money with this one. Just my opinion.

I wish Kosmos would quit sucking. The last time I went in, I swear I ate a chalupa. Since when did their gyros start getting buttered and fried?

say what?! Kosmos is pretty rocken…i hate to hear about a chalupa but geezus they spin out some nice gyros in my opinion. tasty fries to boot. we’d love to do a top three gyros in fayetteville but umm…the only three i know of are Kosmos, Petra, and uhh…the UA Union?

Brewski’s had a damn good burger back in the day. The Reb. Can’t argue with the Guac Burger at Hugo’s though.

I’ll not dispute the inclusion of Hugo’s and Brenda’s, but I’m appalled that Burger Plus wasn’t mentioned. I’m an out-of-towner now and it’s been a while since I had one of their burger-and-tot combos, but it was mighty fine.

I should probably point out that Hugo’s, Brenda’s, and Burger Plus make entirely different kinds of burgers, and the best will be the one you’re in the mood for. Or the one that’s in front of you.

Thanks for the article. I’ll try Art’s next chance I get.

burger plus. I’ve never actually eaten there. Next time I want a burger,I’ll go there. Thanks, David. Glad you like the article. When you go to Art’s, remember to bring a change of clothes or some febreeze… ’cause you’ll reek of smoke. But it’s worth it. Trust me.

I had the Guac Burger at Hugo’s last night. It’s always spot on. Plus I can get it med-rare.

D-Lux was amazing. My uncle used to go watch Ronnie “The Hawk” Hawkins there. Very sad it’s history.

HELP!!!!!!!!!
What’s the name of the open-faced sandwich they served at ROTC (the new place doesn’t count) that was burger meat with mushroom sauce? That was something to look forward to. I’m sad you brought up this burger question cause some of the best burgers in the world are from FAY and I don’t live there any longer. Of course when I visit I could go to Hugo’s or Art’s but HELL NO…I go to Catfish Hole cause that place is better than every burger ever made!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don’t forget to answer the question about ROTC.

crasydad, the combined ROTC/Grill out on 112 still has The Corner Melt that you’re looking for. The food is still pretty good and reasonably priced. They combined the menus of the two Dickson Street restaurants, and kept most of the best (no open faced turkey with gravy and cheese, though). The divorced owners of the two places coexisted out on the highway until TL bought out Anita (and her menu). The pizza is still the same as ROTC and still good. I should have mentioned it during the pizza contest.

Greenhouse and their sweet pot fries, far and away the best tasting. Also wins the “makes you feel good after you eat it” award. Hugo’s? Do you like eating in a dungeon?

Sofa King, your name says it all.

Hugo’s = Good burgers for people who like burgers (the grease IS what makes it taste so good)

People who use the word “gangster” as an adjective to describe veggie burgers = Wee Todd ED
