Will McDonald’s deliver your Sunday Chick-fil-A fix?

May 14th, 2008 by Ted Dancin'

How many times have you found yourself pulling into Chick-fil-A on a Sunday morning (or afternoon) hungover and jonesin’ for a bite of the most delicious fast-food chicken ever created only to realize the damned place is closed for religious reasons? If you’re anything like me, it happens more than you’d probably care to admit.

Well worry no more fellow Chick-fil-A junkies. Somebody has stepped up to the plate to attempt a similar tasting chicken sandwich (and chicken biscuit) and that somebody is McDonald’s.

According to the St. Louis Business Journal, “Starting this week, McDonald’s will share a little bit of the Southern cuisine with customers nationwide and go head to head with Atlanta-based fast food giant Chick-fil-A Inc.”

I know what you’re thinking. Trust me, I do. I thought the same thing. “Does McDonald’s really expect to compete with something as delicious as Chick-fil-A chicken?” The answer is “hell yes.” And as surprised as I am to tell you this, I tried the new Southern Style Chicken Sandwich and it’s really, really close in both taste and texture. Like really close.

I have yet to try the Southern Style Chicken Biscuit which, in my opinion, will be the ultimate test as to whether or not McDonald’s stands any chance at all to gather some of the $2.64 billion that Chick-fil-A pulled in last year. I’m incredibly skeptical since the Chick-fil-A chicken biscuit is extremely high on my list of fast-food favorites, however, if Ronald’s version is only 60% as good, I’ll at least make it my new Sunday hangover breakfast.

If you’re as curious as I am about all this Southern Style biznass, you’re in luck because tomorrow (May 15), anyone who purchases a medium or large drink will receive a free Southern Style Chicken Biscuit (breakfast hours) or Chicken Sandwich (lunch/dinner). If you do, make sure you let me know what you think. Cool?

Finally, if you still can’t get enough, you can always head over to whatcamefirst.com and upload a photo to produce your own personal dancing egg video similar to the one I created using ex-Razorback football coach Houston Nutt’s face (featured below).

If I get up early enough tomorrow, I’ll swing by and get a large coke and free chicken biscuit… then I’ll let you know. I’m always wanting a chic-fil-a biscuit on Sundays. I really hope Mickey-D’s delivers on this one!

  2. aquachong Says:

I just went and tried the sandwich. I agree it tastes very similar. The only difference I noticed was the bun…which is the same one they use on the cheeseburgers. Hope the biscuit is as close.

  3. smiller Says:

It’s in Bentonville, but Bojangle’s has the best chicken bicuit. Hands down. I’m a Chi-fil-A devotee, but Bojangs kicks their ass in this department. No dry ass biscuit.

  4. 2t Says:

Steve Miller eats bicuits. AHHHHHHAAAAAHHAHHAHAHAHAH!!! Loser

  5. the Steve Says:

Everyone is overlooking one of the best things about this post: A Nutt in an egg costume. That shit is hilarious.

  6. Jarsh Says:

smiller: I overheard the same thing earlier today. I’m officially intrigued. Bojangles, here i come.

  7. smiller Says:

    I really can spell.
    Jarsh, do it.

  8. Farrah Says:

smiller has mad respect for the chik-fil-a not-open-on-sunday policy. just like he does for G-Dubya.

  9. Jarsh Says:

@aquachong, I didn’t think the bun was the same as the cheeseburger. It seemed much softer and slightly buttered just like Chic-fil-A. Maybe I just got a really, really fresh cheeseburger bun with some butter?

  10. Strokitecture Says:

I have eaten these sacred biscuits in sacred kentucky with sacred taste buds born of the McDonald’s cult that was my childhood. behold there are McChicken Biscuits and behold, they are good.

  11. JTrain Says:

JTrain’s McDonald’s Chicken Biscuit Report - They’re good. They’re not Chic-fil-A good, but they’re good. It’ll certainly do when I’m craving one on Sunday.

  12. Kornedog Says:

I dig it as well. The biscuit is not quite as dry as Chic-fil-A’s, but the chicken is not quite as tasty as Chic-fil-A’s. That said, living in Maine, aka. the land of no Chick-fil-A, McDonald’s Southern Style Chicken Biscuit is a godsend.

ps. I don’t know about there in the ‘ville, but here the buy-a-medium-drink-get-a-free-chicken-biscuit deal is going on tomorrow as well.

    pss. I’ll be getting one.

  13. EL Dookie Says:

You mf’ers in Benton County have a Bojangles?? And F-ville doesn’t? WTF!!!!

My opinion is that the McChicken Biscuit is not as good as Fil-A, BUT it’s pretty damn close. Good enough that it will take business away from Chick-Fil-A.

That’s what you get for keepin the sabbath holy, suckers!!!

Okay. You knew my comment was coming!

I am a major fast food breakfast junkie. It is one of my big weaknesses just after ice cream and coffee. In my opinion, McDonald’s has the best fast food breakfast. I’ve never been a big fan of the Chick Fil A chicken biscuit – if I could pick, I would always pick McDonald’s Sausage, Egg and Cheese biscuit (or as I like to say, “bye-skew-it”).

As you all know, the new Chick Fil A on 6th street will always have a special place in my heart.

  15. Farrah Says:

Got the free sandwich this morning. The chicken was ok. About as good as a frozen Tyson from the store. The biscuit was buttery and not as dry as the chik-fil-a usually is. Biscuit = buttery delicious. Chicken = just ok. Free = always good.

  16. aquachong Says:

Day two of chicken sandwich. Jarsh…I’m pretty sure it’s the same bun. This is after painstaking image analysis of course.

  17. Jarsh Says:

OK, you’re right. I totally screwed this one and missed out on the free biscuit. I made up for it by getting a free sandwich at lunch. It’s definitely the same bun. But with the buttery flavoring on the inside, it sure doesn’t taste like the same bun. Guess I’m gonna have to buy one of those biscuits tomorrow before I can report anything. Thanks to everyone who has chimed in with the unanimous “better biscuit, worse chicken” opinion.

  18. aquachong Says:

The breakfast biscuit is gonna be the real kicker for me…that’s where the real chic-fil-a addiction is.

  19. zh Says:

yeah, they just put some butter on that bun and it tastes pretty similar. The other key is that they toast it, which they dont do with burgs. I will give them credit for using better chicken than they usually do, but still not as good as the real deal. I will probably eat the biscuits, but I think once was enough for the sandwich. Its not bad, but at some point I realized that it tasted subtly similar to their fish sandwich. Maybe its the same batter. Maybe its fried in the same vat. I dont know why, but it was enough to ruin it for me. Somebody should open a Chic-fil-a franchise, try to open on sunday, and then sue the owners for forcing their religious values on you.

  20. jeremy Says:

we need a poll … Who liked it… I heard that it had a pickle taste.. anyone ?? I didnt get a chance to get one.

  21. Jarsh Says:

You’re right, jeremy. Done and done.

  22. JTrain Says:

Mine did have a pickle taste! I just thought that maybe some sort of pickle mishap had occured. I hate pickles… especially on my breakfast.

  23. bruiser Says:

I heard a rumor that Chic-fil-A marinates their chicken in pickle juice. Is that true?
    mmmmm pickles.

  24. bknittin Says:

yep, I heard they marinated their chicken in pickle juice, and the chicken is fresh, never frozen, and that is why the Chick Fil A is good…person that told me worked in food testing for the Big Bird company,T….

  25. ru.bot Says:

delirious from my on going work all nighter i feel inclined to put this to the challenge. continuing on till 3pm today is will require both version of the biscuit battling it out in my belly. this could back fire and put me right to sleep too, oh well.
