Scull Creek Trail is getting some bridges

  • by Todd Gill, Flyer Staff
    on June 3, 2008 at 8:55 am

Scull Creek Trail, besides having a tough-ass name, is currently the highest in priority for the City of Fayetteville in terms of working towards the completion of our kick-ass alternative transportation trail system.

On Thursday, the trail is getting three of the six required bridges installed starting at 7 a.m. and continuting throughout the day. According to the Northwest Arkansas Times, you can even check out some of the action yourself, if you wanna.

If the public would like to view the construction and progress of Scull Creek Trail firsthand, they will be able to attend a trail tour at 5:30 p.m. June 11.

Once complete, Scull Creek Trail will connect the Dickson Street area’s Frisco Trail which starts at 6th Street to Mud Creek Trail which stretches to the Northwest Arkansas Mall.

This is big news for those of you excited about Fayetteville having one of the most bitchin’ trail systems ever. If you haven’t checked out any of the already open sections yet, now’s the time to head down to 6th Street and see what all the fuss it about. For reals, ya’ll. They are really, really nice.

For a map of the bridge locations, head over to Val’s Bien.

that is totally sweet. i bet it will be nice to have a way to get across town on a bike that doesn’t involve near death on college. good for you guys…

yeah, it’s a nice trail… but you’re s.o.l. if it comes a rainshower… as you may have noticed, the trail follows the creek… the surrounding area is a watershed!! (flat land in the ‘ville?)

then there’s the u of a exp. farm…it drains directly into the creek after washing out the trail and littering it w/ debris… then you have the underground colvert @ gregg & gorden e. long park..which cant be completed til the ar highway dept. finishes widing gregg st above…

and, ok folks, last thing, and the most important, the intersection of gregg st & futrall dr., this where the trail currently dumps you out after riding a few carfree miles…do u want a mental image? cars trying to get off & on the fullbright expressway, WRMC traffic, people trying to get to mall-land…not a cyclist or pedestrian friendly area!!! and there are no crosswalk signals!!!! there’s not a way for trail users to cross or interact w/ car traffic w/o “breaking the law” … which means i’ll have to read some a/hole newspaper editor bitch about cyclist ‘breaking the law’, again!

in all reality, the trails are a good thing…but on some level, it’ll just make motorist pissy when they see cyclist in the streets… ‘why dont they ride the trail’

personally, i have 5 mile commute that requires i ride from crossover & township to old wire to mission…not a single trail on this side.

So, let me get this right: “Serious” cyclists are against the trail? I guess its for those lame, non-serious, leisure cyclists who like to enjoy riding their bikes instead of hard-core would-be bike messengers who would rather the city continue to ignore their needs.

This trail is a rare happening in any town, but it definitely needs support in Fayetteville if we expect anything like it to be developed in the future.

    Plus, it is really nice.

…never said that zh. you’re putting words in my comment that are not there. i’m more than happy to use any of the trails…when they are appropriate to my schedule… the real issue is connectivity. which was the focus of the previous comment (lack there of). hopefully, connectivity will come with time.

oh wait, you said it, ‘leisure’ … let’s talk about the leisure class..

…the leisure class have cars and can afford to fill up…they see cycling as a leisure sport! not transportation! some people ride b/c they dont have cars…ever thought of that?

why are you questioning my civic participation?

were you @ the street committee mtg last june when they removed the proposed bike lanes from weddington? and proposed the same for crossover? i was. i spoke out as well. i’m fairly sure the govt channel taped it as well…very well attended mtg..overflow crowd.

so, i’m guessing we can meet @ the next sidewalk & trail committee mtg since you’re such an advocate?

cyclist have the right to take the full lane.
when passing a cyclist there is a 3 ft rule, as w/ motorcycles.
technically, it’s illegal to ride on the sidewalk.

maybe the path isn’t perfect, but i think we can all agree that it’ll be better than riding on college. am i right?

you’re right. i think we can all agree this is a great first step.
there is a Mayoral debate, Sat. June 7 if you want to ask/encourage about future train systems. i’ve walked the trail from Nightbird books to Stone Mill bread a few times, it’s awesome.

I’m excited about them finally getting this thing done…and as an extra bonus, I’ve been corresponding with Matt Mihalevich from the Trails committee, and have gotten them to agree to brush-hog an access trail from the end of Drake Street (the street to nowhere) to Gordon Long Park, which accesses the Scull Creek Trail. All of us who live off Drake (e.g., the Quail Creek subdivision, Peg, Barcelona, Arroyo, Sierra, Valencia, etc.) will finally be able to WALK TO THE PARK! Oh, happy day…

Maybe then Fayetteville can be on the map just like Ogdenville, North Haverbrook, and Brockway.

Well, sir, there’s nothing on earth
    Like a genuine,
    Bona fide,
    Electrified,
    Six-car
    Monorail! …
    What’d I say?
