2008 Solar Splash!
We’re a little late on getting this one out. Sorry. Hey, man, we do this for free, so just cool your pants, hot shot.
Anyhoo, qualifying event began today at the 2008 Solar Splash, the World Championship of Intercollegiate Solar Boating. The Five Day competition, which is hosted by the City of Fayetteville and the U of A’s College of Engineering, is taking place at our very own Lake Fayetteville.
Over the following three days, teams from around the US as well as a few international teams, will compete in several events to become the 2008 Intercollegiate Solar Boat World Champions. Events include the Solar Slalom, Sprint Heat and Endurance Heat. At the end of the competition a US Navy mini-sub will put on a demonstration and will destroy all but the top three solar boats by launching small underwater torpedoes.
If you’re a solar boat enthusiast, then you probably are already aware this is happening. If you’re not a solar boat enthusiast, then maybe the intense competition between the 18 collegiate teams will change your mind. Probably not, though.
For more information, check out the official Solar Splash page.
PS – I made up the part about the US Navy mini-sub. That won’t happen. It just seems like a solar boat race would be more interesting if you knew that a mini-sub would blow them up after it’s all said and done. Sorry about that one… sorta.

Solar Science is Super!
By Fred Durstington on June 19th, 2008
Last year, or maybe it was the year before, we beat Cedarville so bad that the Cedarville skipper cried real actual human tears out of his eyes. I was flabbergasted yesterday to learn that Cedarville even possessed the testicle balls necessary to show up again this year. That was how badly they were humiliated. With the guiding hand of Lord Jesus we will ****ing destroy them again this year. Hopefully they don’t come back.

You had me all worked up over the thought of torpedoes being hazardously launched across a public lake. I was let down when you said it wasn’t real. But then…Fred got me all worked up again with his solar science **** talking! I may have to go witness this grudge match after all.

Yeah, sorry about that Lankford. It was really just wishful thinking. Maybe some of the Solar Splash big wigs will read this article and realize that, in fact, it would be awesome if a mini-sub blew up the losing boats with torpedoes. We try to use our power for good here at the Flyer.
