Renaissance parking lot coming?
Developers John Nock and Richard Alexander are considering constructing a 67-vehicle parking lot at the site of the proposed Renaissance Tower. Either that, or the parking deck that’s already been planned and approved.
Either way, folks around town will most likely take this news as some sort of relief seeing as the two packed up and left a few months ago after digging a gigantic mud hole.
Offering conflicting reasons for the consideration of a temporary lot, Nock and Alexander appear to at least be thinking about their seemingly forgotten luxury hotel project.
Reason #1 seems to be business-related. “The main thing it does is it allows our other project in which we’ve already invested millions of dollars…it allows it parking,” said Nock. Reason #2 is more OK-we-hear-you focused. “It’s primarily being driven by the request by the city to pretty up that site,” said Alexander.
Some will wonder which reason is really the motivation here. Others will just be happy to see something getting done at all.
The two have already painted the south side of the buildings at the north side of the site. If the parking lot is indeed constructed, it will be bordered by an evergreen shrub hedge with “ornamental accents” along the roadways.
Will anything actually happen? Only time will tell. One thing’s for sure, though. When asked what will happen to the actual hole in the ground on the corner of Mountain and College, Nock had this to say: “We haven’t decided.”

I would really like to see the city tell Nock and anyone associated with him, “Hey, you’re done in Fayetteville until you make this right.” I don’t think a parking lot is going to fix things, and if they can’t fix things they shouldn’t be aloud to start any new projects until they finish this one.

I;m sure they’ve found some tax dodge that gets them more money if they build parking spaces. I don’t think TIF funded parking spaces is “making it right”.

Ornamental accents-what the heck does that mean? Alexander was even whining about what it cost them to paint the back of their renovations. They won’t even commit to filling in the damn hole. A guy died after falling in a much smaller hole at the WAC parking lot back in the day.
The idea that they can skirt regulations by declaring this parking lot, which even they admit is for their own purposes, “temporary” is maddening. In Coody’s answer to the question about the pit on Fayetteville Flyer he says the city can take it back after the permits expire. But they just extended those through 2010 or 2011 didn’t they? Nice perks from being buddies and financial backers of the mayor, I guess. Screw the rest of us-maybe they’ll throw him another margarita fundrasing party this time around. Typical Dan Coody.

Save the mudhole! Has anyone considered the tiny ecosystem that has developed in that lot? How would you feel if someone built a parking lot in your home? Those poor miquitos will have to relocate!
Seriously. I hope SOMETHING gets done. I am tired of that being my view as I drive to the new Chick Fil A on 6th street.

“Mud hole”?
Don’t you mean water-filtering, life affirming bio-swale rain garden?
