Campaign sign destruction on Spring Street
This election season is getting pretty exciting for sure. Nationally, the country seems split between a change of leadership in the White House and locally, deja vu is starting to take hold as if it was the year 2000 all over again.
There’s no doubt that political opinions are becoming heated. Take for example, one couple’s recent troubles with their Obama/Biden yard sign on Spring Street right here in Fayetteville. We were alerted to some anti-Obama-signism that began last Friday and were able to have a few words with the owners of said sign.
“I left my house about 9:00pm to go to the Human Giant show on campus and returned a couple of hours later to find our sign lying on the opposite side of our yard, about 25 feet from its original location. The plastic part that houses the “Obama/Biden 2008″ info had been ripped from the metal that holds the whole thing together. The plastic was wrinkled, and the metal had been bent too. The wind? An act of God?”
OK, so some drunk local stumbled down the road and might’ve fallen on it, right? Nope.
“Later that night, we caught 4 bar-hopping twentysomethings removing it from the ground. Luckily we stopped the perpetrators before they could rip it to shreds. This happens 2 more times on Saturday night. Every time ours was taken down, (our neighbors’) was too.”
Having differing political opinions is one thing. Destroying someone’s property in protest of theirs is another. I can’t say I’m too surprised that Obama signs are being destroyed here in the South. But most of us have probably always fancied Fayetteville as being slightly more progressive than many of our neighbors.
Of course, it’s not to say that one couple’s troubles are any indication of an overall change in attitude around here. Still, it’s disturbing.

That’s ridic!
This seems to happen every election season. Remember back when the prez of the U of A Young Democrats was caught red-handed doing the same thing to Bush/Cheney signs?

I do. It’s an interesting phenomenon. One would like to think that political frenzy was the cause. They see the sign of opposing political view, got exceedingly agitated and angered, tearing through it before they knew what they were doing. Kind of romantic.
However, I must agree with Mr. Dancin’ in his doubts. I hope blind ignorance isn’t behind this, but we shall see. It’ll also be interesting to see how many others have experienced the same sort of damage.

I don’t know, my parents are strongly anti-Obama. They’re not likely to go out tearing up signs, but I do get an ear full whenever we talk politics…I mean I know he’s black and all, but to some people it’s just as bad to be a democrat.

It’s not a problem limited to national politics, either. Local candidates’ signs are being stolen–repeatedly.

Ooh…
I don’t like Obama. But not because he’s black.
I don’t like him because I think he’s a commie douchebag.
I’d vote for the black Ron Paul, if we can find one.

Wow, this turned into “total bastard” saying where he stands. I WILL NOT!!
Instead, political peeps, I’d like to tell you a story about a black man running for office in the town of Shreveport, Louisiana.
Yes, Cedric Glover ran for mayor and one of my friends supported his campaign. My friend lost his yard signs repeatedly. About a month ago he had the honor of meeting Cedric Glover in person and told him about his yard-sign troubles.
Cedric got very, very serious and bent low to whisper to my friend. Cedric said, “Here, I’m going to give you my business card, signed. If you have any more problems call my secretary. We have a way to keep yard signs from being destroyed.”
My friend raised his eyebrows in interest and Cedric continued, “It involves some wire and a car battery.” At this point you really just have to know the mayor of Shreveport. And for that please see this video on recycling:
