Athletic World Advertising closes
About 125 Athletic World Advertising employees are likely pretty ticked off right now.
All employees at the Fayetteville branch were called together yesterday afternoon and were told that that the entire business will be closing for good.
Besides being told not to come into work anymore, employees were also told they might not receive their final paychecks.
“One paycheck is a lot. I have a 3-year-old daughter. I have bills. My whole life surrounded around this job,” said Ben Krum.
A few weeks ago, a similar company, Game On, purchased AWA’s assets but according to 40/29, they’re not currently returning any phone calls.
Does anybody know if these folks will be retained by Game On?

WTF?!? There’s no excuse for not paying your employees. None.

“There’s no excuse for not paying your employees. None.”
I concur, which is my reason for wondering why anyone works at Tim’s on the Square anymore.
I feel sorry for the Athletic employees that won’t get paid, but I don’t mind one less cold-call place in this world.

For those people that did not see this coming- they are fools. There was no cash flow and they were not paying some of the schools the $$ they said they would.

Some of those people could be put to work bottling water…

Holy crap. I worked for them back in 1999/2000. The brothers + cousin who owned it were real A-holes, totally sexist and just not very good businessmen. I’m surprised they lasted this long.
What’s really surreal is that every single week, they had an ad in the Job Guide supposedly looking for graphic designers (what I did). It was a decent job for this town - living wage and health insurance. Too bad. I hope the employees get paid. That sux.

This doesn’t surprise me one bit. AWA is one of the worst places I have ever worked. Their business practices and approach to sales were bordering on illegal during the time I was there. AWA’s philosophy of “whatever it takes” to make a sale often led to promising many things they didn’t have the ability or intent to deliver.
I’d say this to those employees now without a job: Leaving AWA will be the best thing for your lives and career. I promise you. I know several people that left AWA and went on to much better careers and less stressful lives.

In lieu of final paychecks, a PT Cruiser will be given to a randomly selected name from the defunct payroll.

I too worked for AWA. There was such tensions there I ended calling it, ‘The isle of a thousand cold shoulders.’ But, it wasn’t all bad. I did make a couple of really good friends from my co-workers.
