Scull Creek Trail: Grand Opening

October 14, 2008 12:11 pm · By Todd Gill · 6 Comments

This Saturday, October 18th marks the official grand opening of Scull Creek Trail which is one of Fayetteville’s most sweetest bragging points.

From the looks of the flyer released by the city, the 4.4 mile stretch is finally complete and ready to be shown off in style. Spandex style that is. And lots of it.

The celebration is set to go down from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with an official ribbon cutting at noon. There’ll be food, live music and even some prizes given away. Of course, there will also be walking and biking tours of all the trails, bridges and tunnels.

If you wanna do it up right, though, you should consider riding with the Scull Creek Trail Bicycle Tour crew. Starting in Wilson Park at 10:30 a.m., the tour will ride the Scull Creek Trail from the South end, at N Frisco Ave, to the North end, at Steele Blvd and Mud Creek Trail. From there, the group will turn around at Steele Blvd and ride South on the trail to Gordon Long Park arriving at approximately 11:15 a.m. which is just in time for the big hoo-ha.

If you haven’t yet experienced the awesomeness of our city’s trail system, now’s as good a time as any. See you there?

Ok, I rode this morning, starting at Poplar and taking the Scull/Mud to the terminus at Old Missouri.

Every hundred yards or so, I saw a person stopped, looking at the running water, or gazing out through the trees at the fall colors. I saw multiple full young families with kids in tow, walking and biking the trail.

This is undoubtedly one of the coolest top 5 things in Fayetteville now. It is getting USE out the wazoo. I was on the trail around 10 on a Sunday morning (church time, ya know) and I bet I didn’t ride 40 yards without encountering other homo sapiens the entire time.

The tunnel under Fullbright Expwy is a little creepy, but it is lighted. I don’t know that I would feel safe walking in it after dark, though. Its long, and has a slight curve. You can’t see end to end when you go into it.

You HAVE to check out the trails. You don’t need a bike, just go to GLP and walk if you need to. Its an excellent way to spend an afternoon, and you get exercise at the same time.

I can’t say enough about how proud I am of Fayetteville for doing this.

Bonus Question: Can anyone name the Mayor, City Manager, and City Council members in 1991 who were said to have laughed at the idea having a bike trail? Let’s get this on the record.

Walked from near On The Mark to across Fulbright.

Love it so much that I want to hug it and squeeze it and name it Fred.

However, I really do not much like the tunnel under Fulbright. It already smells bad, already has been tagged, and will likely require more police attention than the rest.

They should have gone overpass rather than tunnel. Safer, probably easier to maintain.

I was thinking they need to put a few cameras in it. That should take care of a lot of the current and future problems. I thought about the nice clean walls and how they will soon be covered in graffiti.

Cameras on either end and a couple in the middle pointing out.
