Discuss the candidates: Round 3
This post officially marks the final installment in our Mayoral Candidate Zone in which we’ve covered all six of the candidates for Fayetteville Mayor both personally and politically.
By now, you should know which of the candidates you’d most get along with if stuck on an island with them for an extended period of time. And on a more serious note, you should have a good idea of where each candidate stands on the issues that matter most to Fayetteville right now.
Hopefully we’re not the only ones who have learned a lot in our attempt to bring something to this race that doesn’t currently exist in any of the other traditional media outlets.
So what did you all think about the candidates’ final thoughts? Did anyone seal the deal with you or are you still stumped? Or did you know all along who you were going to vote for?
Better yet, who wants to go out on a limb and make a guess at who will win?

Prediction:Lioneld Jordan will be taking office in January. Sami and Adam will split about 1-3%combined. Lioneld will get about 45-49% in the first count. Dan, Walt and Steve will be very close, but whichever edges his way into the runoff will be defeated by Lioneld pretty soundly. Lioneld’s supporters are passionate and personally invested and will turn out en masse for a runoff. Anyone who doesn’t vote for Dan in the first round will probably not vote for him in a runoff. Steve has too big a hurdle to jump with that conviction grounded in betraying the public trust, and not enough history of involvement in town. Walt has a loyal but finite bunch of supporters but lacks name recognition and charisma, and has baggage of his own.
Nightmare would be two second place contenders tie and leave us to face two run-offs and no definitive resolution for six more weeks or so. That happened before in Fayetteville in a Ward 2 race.
It should be interesting to see to whom the also-rans throw their support, whatever that might be, in the run-off. It would seem that neither Walt or Steve could, in good conscience, endorse Dan. Dan would endorse Lucifer before supporting Lioneld, but if he loses in the first round he will have virtually NO political capitol to transfer. Sami and Adam are wild cards.

I think the bookie nailed it right on the dime head. I also think Lioneld has a chance to hit 50% + 1 and take it without a runoff.

Bookmaker: does the Democrat Gazette’s endorsement of Clark change your prediction any? A betting pool on the city election wouldn’t be bad idea. I still agree with your prediction of the outcome but predicting the breakdown is beyond me. I am guessing this may be a humbling experience for Coody.

The Democrat Gazette endorsed Lioneld–along with the Police, Sierra Club, Fire Fighters, AFSCME and the Green Party.
The Times and Morning News endorsed Clark. The Morning News’ was the most back-handed endorsement I’ve ever seen and the Times’ read like a parody. Those two endorsements hurt Coody but not Lioneld. Lioneld’s voters value his honesty and integrity and aren’t likely to switch to a guy with Clark’s past. But Coody probably thought he at least had the Times in the bag.
So, no, that doesn’t change my prediction. However, in witnessing the support Lioneld has been garnishing, I’m leaning toward giving it to him without a runoff, as Sardon does.

I meant garnering, of course. Although all those endorsements are nice garnish….

You’re dreaming bookmaker. Jordan doesn’t have a chance of taking it without a runoff. Clark has a ton of support with the business crowd and Coody’s support has continued to slide. Which 2 of those three will be in the runoff is up for debate, but this won’t be over on Tuesday.

Clearly I don’t get either newspaper but was just reading off of electronic editions. I’m easily confused.
I would be more inclined to vote for Lioneld if he garnished his supporters, though.
Maybe Coody’s slide will be fast enough to get passed by that fire ant fellow.

If Clark doesn’t make the run-off, will his supporters go to Coody?
Surely they wouldn’t go to Jordan. He isn’t going to help business one whit in this city.
NIMBYs will run the city, nothing will get done, and South Pass will be annexed by Greenland and promptly become a truckstop and apartment complex.

If Clark doesn’t continue and Coody does,(not bloody likely, btw!) I seriously doubt Clark would urge his supporters to vote for the guy he has repeatedly and pointedly savaged with seeming great pleasure in debates and who has demonstrated to him in a very personal way the depths of his self-centeredness. Clark is not stupid.
And, if your dire prediction of SouthPass’ fate were to come true (also not bloody likely, btw), at least the citizens of Fayetteville wouldn’t be paying for it. SouthPass will have many apartments as planned, you know.
And what has your mayor ever done to help business other than some greedy developers, many of whom are now bankrupt? Not half a whit.
Lioneld will win, runoff or not.

Here is how the run off will shake out. And remember when it happens Ronnie said it first.
Clark and Jordan will be in it. Eilers, Firecat, and Sutton will support him. Dan will throw his support behind Lionald as well just to try and sabotage him. Saddam Hussian and Abraham Lincoln will rise from the grave and have a 9 round battle royal with Hulk Hogan as the guest referee while Sammi organizes a bake sale for the Chamber of Commerce. Meanwhile Scooby and the Gang will catch the pirate ghost and unmask him to find out it was Brandon Barber haunting the Legacy Building.
After that the Y2K bug finally hits and we are all screwed.

Fascinating and revealing financial disclosure forms for Jordan, Clark, Eilers and Coody are on the Iconoclast. (Sutton and Cat didn’t file by the deadline.)
There’s some juicy stuff in these reports, folks! You may or may not be surprised where these guys are getting their money and what they’re spending it on.
Link is on the Homepage here in related sites.

Those disclosures are pretty interesting.
Jordan has the union vote.
Coody has the most impressive list of donors IMO as far as people who I believe care about making Fayetteville better. In other words, the architects, and infill developers who I personally admire. Mark Zweig does amazing renovations of existing homes in the central Fayetteville area and although he is not a contributor, he appears in one of Coody’s commercials. He and Greg House actuall DO things that improve our community. It speaks loudly that they support Coody, while the whiners all fall in line behind Jordan.
There’s probably some interesting factoids in those disclosures that I don’t get because of their obscurity. Anybody find anything that jumps out at them?

So, my vote goes for Lioneld!

The “Southpass” area is not just empty space. There are some substantial homes in the are that would also have to be annexed. And they won’t go to Greenland without a major fight. In fact, even if Southpass gets funded, annexation by F-ville won’t be welcomed either.

The fire and police unions support Jordan, not city employees. There is a big difference. I heard he promised to recognize their union for collective bargaining and that is why they support him.

Firefighters and Policemen ARE city employees, Polecat! Duh. Jeez, give the readers a little credit. Anyone curious to know can ask any firefighter or police officer just what Lioneld promised them. I overheard one of these heroes answer the question of what they expected to be different in a Jordan administration with: “Respect, fairness and honesty from the mayor’s office–for a change.” Nuff said?
Once again, as has been pointed out, the Fraternal Order of Police is no more a union than the Girl Scouts. Look it up.

I wish Coody could find one of those Make Everybody Happy wands to waive that Jordan has.
Oh my, the future is going to be so bright with Lioneld. We will all hold hands and prance along the hilltops in peace.
That will bring in the tax revenues, for sure. Or maybe not.
Of course, who needs tax revenues when you’ve got love, baby?

That wand Lioneld has earned is crafted from years of honest hard work, respect for every citizen (not just the ones with big money) and basic trust. Coody will never find one.
You’re content to pay your mayor for shamelessly campaigning on our dimes? Wouldn’t that money we’re paying him be better used to help defray the costs of his bumbling mismanagement?
Pisses me off royally.

63% of Fayetteville voters decided that Dan Coody was not worthy of re-election. I obviously concur.
Vote for Lioneld November 25th! Fayetteville deserves much better than Coody!

This turned out about like I expected.
Wow, from the noise on the internet and jobless hippies holding signs for Lioneld, you would have thought it would be a landslide victory for Jordan.
I knew Coody would get first, and that Clark would make a stronger-than-expected showing.
I can’t imagine the pro-business people who voted for Clark voting for Lioneld. Lioneld will allow the NIMBYs to bring all development in this city to a screeching halt.
The runoff will be close because the Jordan supporters are obsessed with getting rid of Coody. Plus, apparently none of them have jobs.

TB, I don’t know where you got the idea that Lioneld supporters don’t have jobs. That’s ridiculous. I know at least a dozen Lioneld fans, and all of us have jobs.
That said, I expected Lioneld to do better yesterday and was surprised that Coody did so well. It just goes to show you, a lot of people just vote for the name they recognize.

TB, I have no personal axes to grind, and I’m not disputing that this city is better than it was 8 years ago. It’s also in a lot more debt than it was then. I think Coody’s had a good run, and there have been both pros and cons to his leadership. I just think this city could use some new energy. Lioneld Jordan is a genuine, kind, intelligent person with fresh ideas, and I’d like to see him as mayor.
