Northwest Arkansas Times’ missing photos
Today’s print edition of the Northwest Arkansas Times featured some near-perfect coverage of the candidates running for political office in Fayetteville.
Included were bios, statements and photos for mayoral candidates as well as those running for Fayetteville City Council seats in Ward 1, Ward 2 and Ward 4.
Unfortunately, we can’t give an A+ on this one because curiously absent were photos of Fayetteville mayoral candidate Adam Fire Cat and Ward 2, Position 2 candidate Matthew Petty.
We contacted both candidates this afternoon and they assured us that they did their part to provide photos to the Northwest Arkansas Times’ staff.
“I was requested to provide a photo, and I did. I even received a confirmation email from the reporter who contacted me,” said Matthew Petty. Adam Fire Cat had similar comments saying, “They have them, they just didn’t use them.”
Although nobody should be casting a vote for a particular candidate based on appearance, there’s no doubt that being able to put a face with a name is incredibly helpful, especially when it comes to a potential local political figure.
It’s not that big of an issue we don’t suppose. Neither candidate seemed all that concerned about it. But as paid subscribers, we felt a little gypped. I wonder if anyone else did, too. I guess the average reader could just do a little Googlin’ if they really wanted to see these folks’ faces but they certainly shouldn’t have to. Not in a city as big as Fayetteville with a newspaper as big as the Times.
Aside from the photo slip-up, the coverage was great and if you’re still stumped on who to vote for, make sure you read it.
Below are the links to the online versions of the coverage but be warned, the Northwest Arkansas Times usually just does a copy-n-paste when it comes to putting content online and the result is a pretty big mess that’s incredibly hard to read. Oh, and the amount of photos available online is even slimmer for some reason.

Oh well… maybe they will reprint it with a photo. :)
Until then, please visit my website to get the scoop. http://citycouncil.matthewpetty.org
If you haven’t voted yet and you live in Ward 2, you should vote for me. I’m the only candidate with specific plans for addressing Fayetteville’s growing economic concerns by focusing on local businesses while also expanding the parks and funding the trails.
In the Chamber of Commerce debate, my opponent (Mark Kinion – votekinion.com) said it was presumptuous of me to have specific plans before being elected. I don’t understand that logic, because specific plans are exactly what we need to raise long-term revenues. Specific plans are what we have been missing.

Matthew is not telling the entire story. I have a well established record of community service and successful business experience managing multimillion dollar Federal, State, Municipal, Military and Major Medical Center contracts. I well know what a real and meaningful business plan is. A vote for Mark Kinion is a vote for experience, integrity, honesty, hard work and transparent government. Please visit my website http://www.votekinion.com.
I prefer to run a positive campaign and will not misrepresent the comments of my opponent. You can trust me to have a well informed position on issues regarding economic development, budgeting, social sustainability and environmental sustainability.
Additionally I have been endorsed by the Sierra Club, the Fayetteville Fire Fighters and support of the NW Arkansas Metro Area Board of Realtors.
I have a record of service to support my positions. Past leadership includes serving as President of the Humane Society of the Ozarks, The Fayetteville Council of Neighborhoods, Wilson Park Historical Neighborhood Association, Fayetteville Housing Authority, Founding Board member of the Partners for Better Housing, National Association of Redevelopment and Housing Officials, American Lung Association of Arkansas, Ozark StageWorks and Planned Parenthood.
Please vote for a person with a documented record of Community Action and proven leadership. Vote for me to be your City Council Alderman.
Thanks,
Mark Kinion

Thanks for showing up guys. I suggest doing a little neighborhood campaigning. Maybe I am less informed than most Ward 2 residents, but I hadn’t heard from or of either of you, except for a couple of signs, when I voted last week.
I didn’t vote for either of you because I didn’t know anything about you.
My fault, I know, but I think a little pavement pounding would go a long way.

I’ve been walking the ward regularly for several months and attending every public event possible. I also have been at Farmer’s Market with my information, trusty and rusty folding table and friends from 6:30 AM until Noon for the last three months or so. Sorry I missed you TB. – Mark

It’s funny that a potential local politician has a criminal history including an arrest for manufacturing drugs. I was in drug court with Mr petty due to my own mistakes and later found that he was running for local office. I bet thats not on his flyers. i voted for the other guy simply because those with criminal history should not run for office. Though I dont know him personally, it shows bad judgment and character.

Uhhh…hypocrite much? Don’t be so hard on yourself TF. Your judgment and character probably aren’t that ****ty. People make mistakes. I don’t think that should exclude them from public office. God knows i’ve done some things i’m not proud of, but by most standards i’m a pretty well adjusted adult (as long as you grade on a curve).
Of course, there are degrees of everything.

I’m not a hypocrite, my offense was alcohol abuse which I’m sure many Arkansans can relate to. Also I was not Manufacturing drugs which tells me that this candidate intended to deceive and flaunted the law. And I am not running for a public office, nor would I if I had a felony conviction. I don’t recall which drug it was but I’m sure if it was Meth everyone would agree that he was not fit. Just my 2 cents.

I smoke some pot and drink a beer once in a while, but I have NEVER done ANY of the harder, more addictive drugs. ( Actually, after my wisdom teeth were removed, I probably took the medicine too often.)
I was arrested five years ago for having a notebook with information on how to grow mushrooms. I was never arrested for manufacturing drugs. I wasn’t even charged with possession. It was BS and looking back, I should have taken it to trial just on principle.
I was exonerated of all allegations and my record has been sealed. In fact, I completed Drug Court almost a month early and with 100% compliance. I have never had a drug problem, and if you’re going to tell people about our time in Drug Court together, at least get the facts straight. I don’t mind being open and honest about my past, but I never manufactured, grew, or sold anything, and you shouldn’t tell people that I did.

We’re not running a negative campaign at all. Just the facts for us. Mark’s resume is nothing to scoff at, but I have a record of accomplishments and community service at least as impressive. What separates Mark and I are two things: our ages and our agendas.
Fayetteville needs someone with fresh ideas and a dynamic plan of action. Since announcing in April, I have made it a point to have specific proposals. It may be cheesy, but I’m ready on day one, and I think that is what Ward 2 wants.
We need someone who is ready to open discussion, because our Council has not been very proactive. In fact, you can count the number of new ordinances on both hands that have introduced by the Council in the last decade. We have a vision for urban sustainability in Fayetteville but we need a Council with more leadership to fulfill it.
We need a leader with a plan, and that’s why you should vote for me. If you want to know more about my qualifications and my ideas to move Fayetteville forward, visit my website: http://citycouncil.matthewpetty.org
If you would like to know something more specific, like how I’ll create jobs and give struggling families their purhasing power back., just email me through my website or post the question here.

Thanks Matthew. I wish I lived in Ward 2 so I could vote for you.
Too Funny – Keep your ignorance to yourself unless you have all the facts. You might be a fine person…I don’t know you (nor do i know mr petty), but that kind of **** makes me sick.
