Eilers and Fire Cat support Jordan

November 8, 2008 10:55 pm · By Todd Gill · 19 Comments

Speaking at Washington Square this morning, former mayoral candidates Walt Eilers and Adam Fire Cat told a crowd of supporters that their nods are officially going to runoff candidate Lioneld Jordan.

“Lioneld has the set of skills to help the city move forward,” said Eilers. “I encourage you to help him out.”

Wearing a half-black, half-white tuxedo, Adam Fire Cat said he agrees with Jordan’s fiscal responsibility philosophy. “To me, numbers are black and white,” said Cat.

If Jordan is to beat out incumbent Dan Coody in the runoff election on November 25th, he’ll need the support of not only Eilers and Fire Cat but also their respective supporters. Getting people to the polls once is tough enough.

Still no word on who Steve Clark will endorse.

Jordan is a big step backwoods.

I mean backwards.
Hopefully not.

Right. This coming from the man who voted for the McCain/Palin ticket.

With Jordan:

Would College Avenue be being made into the sweet ass road it is currently being made into?

Would we have ANY kind of green companies from Europe looking at our city?

Would the trail system have been feasible with a unionized city employee payroll to cover?

NO
NO and
NO.

Jordan is going to be a huge mistake and a big chill as far as progress in this city is concerned.

But, the NIMBYs will be happy and our city employees will be as motivated and productive as the U of A lifers.

This is my hobby, ass.

Man…this is a tough one. I voted Coody on the 4th and I’m leaning toward the same in the runoff. Jordan was (and is) my second choice. I have to agree with TB here. I do not think a unionized police and fire dept is the best thing for Fayetteville. There are definitely pros and cons to each side, but I think it would be counterproductive. I think this is a legitimate concern with Jordan.

Coody has done a lot of good for this city and he’s earned the right to build off that. He has a good track record of balancing fiscal responsibility (water treatment plant aside) with environmental responsibility. It is a little disturbing to see the other candidates lining up against him, but I think they may have a personal axe to grind.

I know what “right-to-work” means. Do you know what “employment at will” means?

I haven’t been in a union, but I have worked over union ****heads.

They’re typically lazy and feel entitled.

So Lioneld working with the U of A employees to ensure that the U of A is run more ineffeciently and un-needed personell keep their jobs in spite of the market….is that a good thing, or a bad thing?

Do we admire him for that, or dislike him for that?

I am confused.

How is Lioneld going to make everybody happy again?

Do I admire Lioneld for putting his own job on the line to save the jobs of others?
Yes!
Are the Firefighters unionized?
Yes.
Is the FOP a union?
No.
Did Dan Coody actively seek their endorsements?
Yes.
Did he then turn around and badmouth them at every opportunity because they chose to endorse Lioneld?
Yes.
Did he do the same with the Sierra Club and the Green Party?
Yes.
Is there anything to admire about his childish, vindictive behavior?
No!!!!!!
Is this out of character for him?
No.
TB, You wrote:”So Lioneld working with the U of A employees to ensure that the U of A is run more ineffeciently and un-needed personell keep their jobs in spite of the market….is that a good thing, or a bad thing?”
Check Lioneld’s record at the U of A. He has been recognized for his exemplary management skills, both fiscally and job performance.
So, ignoring your spin, yes, his work as a supervisor of union employees is a good thing.

No matter who gets elected in the run off collective bargaining will come to the city of Fayetteville and every other city in America. Right now in the US Senate there is a bill (s 2123) waiting for a vote. When it passes (and it will) every public safety officer in America will have the same right that every other employee in this great country has enjoyed for the last 50+ years. IF the employees decide to form a union the city they form it in will have recognize them as a union and bargain with them for wages and benefits. It will be FEDERAL law.

And it’s funny, 8 years ago when the fire fighters endorse “Honest Dan” he was happy to have that endorsement. Now 8 years later they are “union thugs” and are going to destroy this fine city. Maybe the fire fighters and cops don’t like Dan anymore because they have had to deal with his childish and demeaning ways for the last 8 years?

Jordan is a consummate politician–all he wants is to get in office, he doesn’t care about the people. He is/was supposed to be “alderman” for our precinct. He showed up uninvited in my driveway just before elections and asked for my vote. I pressed him on matters he was supposed to be taking care of as alderman for our precinct and what had become of them (they wanted to open two quiet existing neighborhood streets as through-traffic for 7,500 new homes to be developed–because they didn’t want to disturb a golf course on one existing thoroughfare and completely ignored the fact they already had another!!!). He was supposed to help fight it.

So I asked him what had become of that issue. “Hem-haw, hem-haw..” When pressed I finally got, “Oh I don’t remember whatever became of that.”

What about the traffic issues Jordan? Oh I don’t remember what became of that. What about job loss Jordan? Oh I don’t remember what became of that. What about fixing potholes Jordan? Oh I don’t remember what became of that. What about crime, infrastructure, jobs, taxes, etc. Jordan? Oh I don’t remember what became of that.

Vote for him if this is what you want to wake up to one day in Fayetteville. I know nothing of the other guy but I’m definitely taking the unknown over some forgetful P.O.S. who doesn’t give one rat’s ass about his people and is only concerned w/ getting into office. Enjoy.

Multitudes of people have stepped forward to support Lioneld, telling diametrically opposed stories to this one. People from within Ward 4 and people from other wards who have found the only help they got from anyone connected with the city have shared their stories in letters to the editor with names and specifics attached. He is known for following through and finding answers.
If Coody is an “unknown” to you that is shocking. One would think that, giving tentative credence to the first portion of your story, you would also have pursued it with our other fine alderman, Shirley Lucas. Your story, if true, would be the exception that proves the rule.
If these two hard workers couldn’t get answers, the logical next step would’ve been to turn to the mayor. Of course, Coody is notorious for not returning calls and not following through. But, as a citizen with a concern, you also hold some responsibility for not carrying your share in resolving your issue.
I know Lioneld. He is neither rude nor ignorant. He is not irresponsible nor is he incompetent. I don’t believe what you are saying for a minute.
Your gross mischaracterization of a fine man speaks volumes.

Uhhh, there’s no **** on my face “b”. I just checked. I’m simply stating my opinion. We could argue the merits of unions all day and get about as far as we would arguing over abortion. And yes, I grew up in a union household. My dad was hardcore union. Sometimes they are good and sometimes they are not (see US auto/airline industries).

From everything I know, Lioneld Jordan is a great public servant and would make a fine mayor. I feel better knowing we have people like him serving in our local government. I will be happy with the outcome either way. At this time, my vote still goes to Coody based on his proven record of moving our fair city forward.

George: I appreciate that you don’t feel the need to throw mud at Lioneld. However, in following the thread back to see why you opened your last comment as you did, I was puzzled to read that you felt our mayor has exhibited fiscal responsibility aside from that giant debt incurred under his watch with the sewer plant debacle and that you give him good grades for environmental efforts.

On the fiscal front:Are you aware that Coody proposed a tax increase last year, got turned down by the Council and then absented himself for the entire budget process? (Lioneld, as Vice Mayor, led the council in working out the budget for this year.)That he has proposed taking money out of reserves for this year, despite being specifically instructed by the Council to bring forward a balanced budget? That they passed that resolution because in his entire tenure he has NEVER brought forth a budget without proposing dipping into reserves and/or a tax increase?

Environmentally:Why do you suppose that both the Sierra Club and Green Party endorsed Lioneld instead? Why do longtime stalwart local environmental leaders like Fran Alexander and Melissa Terry and Al Vick support Lioneld? Do you remember Wilson Springs? Did you follow discussions of Ruskin Heights, Aspen Ridge and now the behemoth SouthPass? Coody has been the head cheerleader on all of these projects. He vetoed the much stricter hillside ordinance passed by the Council and forced a watered down version instead.

Please, if you are basing your vote on fiscal and environmental responsibility, give credit where credit is due–to Lioneld Jordan.

If you want someone responsible and accountable, who loves and understands our city and its natural beauty and all of its people, Lioneld is the best choice.

Trails Question
November 11, 2008

Insn’t it true that Coody fought against some of the trails ?

lioneld fan
November 11, 2008

Coody balked at including the trails in the bond issue election–the so-called “4 For Fayetteville” special election a couple of years back. Had that particular bond issue not passed, the money from which was earmarked specifically and exclusively for trails, some of the progress made on the trails since then might never have happened.
But you would never know it to listen to him ceaselessly claim credit for the very existence of trails in Fayetteville, would you?

The problem with politics on blogs and message boards is that people often have an agenda or vested interest in one of the candidates. The only reason they are commenting is to push their candidate and trash the other…often regardless of validity. I am just an average Fayetteville citizen searching for information. I am probably more educated on the local issues than most, but not as much as others. I am familiar with some of the issues you bring up, but not with others.

You wanna sell me on Jordan? Fine. I’ll bite. While I understand that many of the issues are important, they really don’t mean **** toward getting my vote. Here’s what could influence me. How is Lioneld Jordan going to bring more quality jobs for college graduates to Fayetteville? If these jobs had a “green” twist…all the better. The sustainability movement is also very important to me, but I fully believe Jordan is capable of continuing / expanding that cause. There really just aren’t that many great jobs in Fayetteville. Of course there are exceptions. I’m effing sick of driving to Bentonhell every damn day. It sucks.

I’m sure a lot of this will be discussed in the upcoming debates. I’ll be cramming as the runoff draws near.

Isn’t Dan Coody the first person involved in our city government who spearheaded the planning and construction of a trails system in the first place?

This is an example of what is weird about this whole Coody bashing.

People seem to forget that without Dan Coody, many of the quality of life and economic development issues we’re bickering about wouldn’t have ever even gotten started.

Lioneld Jordan seems to have some good ideas, but Dan Coody has proven his ability to bring forth real change in this city. He isn’t perfect, but I feel he has earned the right to continue leading with his vision for Fayetteville.

Watching the debate right now, and just saw a great example.

The moderator asked the candidates to give examples of initiatives they had sponsored for the city.

Dan listed several, and said go to his website for more.

Lioneld started his statement with “I supported all of those initiatives” while on the city council.

Dan doesn’t sound like a bad leader to hear Lioneld tell it.

Wow, I hope we don’t screw up and ditch our mayor. I really feel like he is one of the best small city mayors in this part of the country.

Coody is history,TB.
I went to the debate. If the number of peoople who support their candidate enough to come out on a chilly night for a debate is any indication of who will win, we’ll have ourselves a new mayor-elect in two weeks and a new mayor in January. The room was packed, with overflow and lots of people who went home to watch on tv when they realized they would be standing outside. It was a virtual sea of Lioneld’s blue buttons and stickers. All four former candidates were there and none of them looked glad to see Coody.
Lioneld did continue the answer you referenced to cite many initiatives that he had brought forth. Difference is, Coody has been full time and had at his beck and call a full time staff of 720 people. Lioneld primarily supported the many worthy initiatives brought forth by the CITY STAFF, not Coody. Coody continues to try and grab credit for everything good and blame for nothing.
Coody tripped all over himself trying to clean up the mess he has gotten himself into by trash-talking the Fire and Police Departments until he slipped up and got off script and whined about the Firefighters successfully suing the city for earned overtime pay a few years back. He looked foolish when Lioneld rightly pointed out that the Firefighters have been unionized since 1982 and that Coody actively sought their endorsement and that of the Police. Coody had sour grapes written all over him.
Looks like Lioneld will prevail. Very good news for Fayetteville.

Lioneld over Coody is not good news for Fayetteville. Its a big step backwards.
