Flyer Profile: The Isles
Do you like awesome?
If so, there’s a pretty sweet band coming to town this weekend to supply a full dose of it.
New York band The Isles will be playing Saturday, Nov 15th along with locals the Memphis Pencils and David’s Pegasus at the Union Ballroom on the campus of the University of Arkansas. University student radio station KXUA will sponsor the event, and I believe the show is free to attend.
The Isles have been described as “flashes of contemporary color in flighty rhythms but a wash of late 1980s British Indies influences,” and Pitchfork called them “nearly as over-the-top as My Chemical Romance but even less believable.”
If you aren’t sure what that means, (neither are we) you’d better just hop over to the Uniion Ballroom Saturday night and find out for yourself.
We were lucky enough to get a brief interview with the band, and you can click here to check them out on myspace.
Fayetteville Flyer: What have you been listening to lately?
The Isles: The Kinks, A bunch of different classical stuff
FF: What other bands have you guys been in?
The Isles: The Star Band, The Natural History, The Memories, ISS, Gleemer, Face Parade, Holy Hail, tremble in the heat… And a bunch of conceptual fake bands that seemed like a good idea on a late night and evaporated in the morning.
FF: Ever been to Arkansas? If so, what was your impression of the place?
The Isles: None of us have been to Arkansas but have heard that it’s a pretty place and I really like the word Ozark.
FF: Any big projects coming up?
The Isles: We recorded our second album over the summer and it will be out in April. We’ll be playing regionally until the spring and then a US tour.
FF: Who are some bands you guys have played with that we may not have heard of, but should check out?
The Isles: I like this blog: http://earfarm.blogspot.com/
New York Noise (Channel 25) plays some good stuff
A few that I’ve liked recently:
Coyote Eyes
The Antlers
Murder Mystery
FF: How is the scene in New York
The Isles: There are a lot of different things going on. We’ve done a lot of events at our house/studio, Action Jackson. We’ve had a lot of bands play: Japanther, Auvoir Simon, Diamond Knights, Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson…
The best stuff happens at these types of homegrown events rather than the traditional club circuit.
That said, we really like Union Hall (and Skippy the promoter) – well curated and something of a scene.

When is NY gonna stop attracting and bands with animalish names? Its been going on for nearly 10 years now and, its starting to seem like a joke. Its also time for people to get over using “The” at the beginning of their name.
Anybody want to be in my new band, “The Hooves” or maybe just a two man group, “Hoof and Mouth”.

hoof and mouth is a great name.
sadly, they could not play with the isles since the isles is the name of a place and not an animal. maybe that is how the billing got confused with davids pegasus and the memphis pencils. One of these things is not like the other one.
this is a fun game when you think about it.
