Chicken ordinance passes
A few weeks ago our own Wiff Rightly expressed his frustration with a proposed chicken ordinance that would allow up to four hens per home in residential areas of Fayetteville.
For the most part, Rightly found no support in our comments section. Most of our readers seemed to be behind the proposition. “4 Chickens will not stink, hens are not loud, and they are really quite charming critters when you get to know them,” wrote one commenter.
The issue was brought back up at last night’s City Council meeting and it passed with a vote of 7-1.
The ordinance also eliminates a previous rule that stated coops must be raised off the ground and at least 40 feet away from a a residence. The new distance rule is 25 feet and the hens will only be allowed in back yards or side yards.
If it’s any consolation, Wiff, roosters were ruled out due to obvious noise reasons.

I’m all about it. My wife and I will be looking to purchase a couple of hens as soon as possible. This is a good move on the city’s part.

Notice there was nothing in the ordinance to make sure that the chickens are in this country legally.

Get a rooster too!
If people can have dogs that bark I can have a rooster!
The rooster never barks before 8am ( unless the neighbors dogs barking earlier wake it up-rare)
the hens and rooster put them selves to bed right before dark everynight like clock work, its automatic, they waddle back up into the coop and goto sleep.
the dogs however, CONTINUE to bark late at night, all night, into the early mornings.
I say outlaw DOGS.

Do you have to contact someone at the city to get a permit to have your four hens? Do they get inspected as far as 25 ft away from residence. Thank you.

@Tracy – Nope, no permit required. Enforcement is complaint-based.
I can’t wait to show everyone my chicken house, but construction is going to be more difficult with a bum leg. I did the designs in Google Sketchup because I’m a nerd.
