Today is Repeal Day!

When you get off work today and crack open that first weekend beer, take a second to appreciate it. You see, 75 years ago today(Decmber 5th, 1933) the 21st amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified, repealing the 18th amendment and thus ending 14 years of prohibition.

According to www.RepealDay.org:

The Women’s Christian Temperance Union, which had been promoting Prohibition for many years, believed alcohol was the cause of many, if not all, social ills. Mistruths like this were spread. Lines were drawn. Bars and taverns were vandalized. People were killed. On January 16th, 1919, Congress passed the Volstead Act, outlawing alcohol and ostensibly putting an end to drunkenness, crime, mental illness, and poverty.

Over the course of the years that followed, organized crime, much of it centered around the production and distribution of alcohol, ran rampant. Slowly, support for prohibition began to wane and eventually, on December 5th, 1933, Prohibition was repealed… and thank God for that.

To celebrate, head on out to your local liquor store and pick up a six pack… Or hit the bars and put a few down in honor of the big day.

Make sure to tip your bartender while you’re at it.

In addition to celebrating today, everytime you crack open a can of Miller Lite, uncork a bottle of vino, take a shot of jager or pour yourself a glass of whiskey, drink one in honor of F.D.R. and the 21st Amendment.

Kiss these ladies, or drink and not kiss these ladies? Hmmm? Tough decision.

Those ladies I’m sure represent the end of their gene pools. Unless maybe some dude found enough shine, runned rum, or Canadian whiskey to get up the courage to mount up upon one of them.

I’ll celebrate at Happy Hour at The Early Bird Cafe, where the talk is fast and clever and the ladies oh so fine. Google the lyrics check out this version of EBC on You Tube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qvt0kHY-eSw). Great song by The Serfs out of Wichita.
