Weekend: Dec 26, 27, 28

Well, most of us are back at work today after the holiday’s fell smack in the middle of the week this year, leaving this lonely Friday stuck on the 26th with no good reason to close the office. And unless you’ve saved a vacation day for this odd occurrence, then you’re working today with the rest of us.

Most of us are feeling the effects of a holiday hangover, both of the too-much-food, too-much-family, and some of us, of the too-much-egg-nog variety.

So what’s the best way to cure a holiday hangover like this? Hair of the dog, my friends. Hair of the dog.

This weekend, there’s plenty going on around town to cure that stomach/head ache. Here’s what we suggest checking out for your post-holiday holiday.

Suggestions: Unfortunately, even rock-and-roll takes a vacation over the holidays, and Friday night, the pickin’s are pretty slim in the live music arena in Fayetteville. Your best bet for a fix is at George’s tonight, where Earl Cate, Steve Pryor, and Dave Stiles Birthday Party Jam will be happening.

Saturday night will also be rocking in Fayetteville with Dead Bird, Seahag and Queen Beast taking the stage at the OPO. Word on the street is that the OPO is going the way of the the Green Door soon, so you’d better check out some tunes there while you can.

Also on Saturday, the Razorback basketball team returns to action against Northwestern State. Tickets have been readily available for all games at Bud Walton this year, so that’s always an option.

Sunday, check out the Pope County Bootleggers at George’s, and take full advantage of their Monster Mug Night deals.

The Deadbird/Queen Beast show is actually THE last show at the O.P.O.

If you were planning on coming out to the super awesome Inner Party CD release show w/ Dreamfast and the Heat Machine there on January 5, you’ll need to head to George’s instead that night b/c that’s where it was moved to… not that I’m partial to the Inner Party or contend that they are the greatest band in the world and have a bassist who is incredibly handsome and sexually attractive to all women or anything like that.

Hot ladies – whatever you do, please don’t go to that show on the 5th and throw your bras and panties at that bass player guy!

Ok kids. I realize that the Cates are a generation or so older than most of the Flyer’s readers and writers, but still. A night where Earl Cate and Steve Pryor play isn’t a night without Rock ‘n’ Roll. n The Cates, and Earl in particular are hidden, forgotten national treasures, and y’all are damn lucky to be able to go see ‘em now and then. Mortality being what it is, it’s not something you’ll be able to do forever, so take advantage of your opportunities. I know, I know, the Cates have been hanging around your scene your whole damn life (well, actually long before that)but they won’t be here forever.

If you do go, one thing to look for: Steve Pryor is a mighty fine guitar player, and certainly a hot soloist, but listen to what Earl does behind him when Steve solos. The way that Earl comps behind other players, the tasteful chords and improvised harmonies…it’s really the stuff of good music, and not just hot guitar-guy jams.

Thanks Urk, and you are right. The “rock-and-roll takes a vacation” comment was mainly due to the lack of choices for live music Friday night. A lot of live music venues around town weren’t having shows.

No disrespect to Mr. Cate and Mr. Pryor was intended.
