MILK, Gus Van Sant film, Opening this Weekend

Milk, the Gus Van Sant film, is finally making its way up north. AMC Fiesta Square 16 (on College) will open Milk at 7:20 tonight.

With 8 Academy Awards Nominations, it could be a film worth seeing. Just make to wash your hands after viewing.

Harvey Milk became the nation’s first openly gay man elected to public office. Elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, he was assassinated by a fellow supervisor just eleven months after taking office.

Academy Awards Nominations:

  • Best Picture, Milk (Dan Jinks, Bruce Cohen)
  • Best Director, Gus Van Sant
  • Best Actor, Sean Penn
  • Best Supporting Actor, Josh Brolin
  • Best Original Screenplay, Dustin Lance Black
  • Best Costume Design, Danny Glicker
  • Best Editing, Elliot Graham
  • Best Original Score, Danny Elfman

Has anyone already seen this? Anyone have any thoughts?

The character emotion really surprised me. Also, I found the characters (based on real-life people) tangible, relatable.

I tried to watch it, but gave up about half way through. I just found it dry and boring, but I hear that others really like it, so that that’s probably just me.

Why should I wash my hands after watching?

It was good, but not Oscar worthy in my opinion. Sean Penn’s performance still had some I Am Sam in it. I don’t think Harvey Milk was really like that. I don’t think the Josh Brolin performance should have been nominated, but it was solid. I liked Emile Hirsch. Overall, good movie, but it left me wanting more out of it, but also to know more, which is a good and bad thing.

Saw it last night. It’s a solid movie and plays out more like a documentary than a drama.

@Scott It was a bad joke at dirty homosexuals.

@Micah agreed, it did have a very documentary-feel about it.

I thought Emile Hirsch’s character was way over the top, and the movie was rife with those types. This is (for some infuriating reason) yet another Hollywood Issue movie that is garnering most of its praise and taking-forever-to-reach-NWA mystique simply because it’s about a man whose story, though respectable, is tied to a divisive issue.

This wouldn’t bother me quite so much if Revolutionary Road weren’t considerably more engaging than Milk, Slumdog, et al., yet largely snubbed for the Academy Awards.

Wow. A real live movie about real live homa-sekssuals at Fiesta Square?

I guess God punished us in advance with the ice storm for this one.

I hope it was worth it sinners!

anyone who has seen the Harvey Milk documentary (check it out at the library)
knows Sean Penn is a great Milk. His mannerisms are dead on. i wish this were more experimental Van Sant (paranoid park, last days), than commercial Van Sant (finding forrestor). glad they added the possibility Dan White was a jealous closeted homosexual, i think that adds a whole new realm of sadness. this film rules.
