More Wakarusa artist additions
The folks at Wakarusa have added another sixteen artists to this year’s lineup and topping the list are The Black Crowes. Although the Crowes were here just last August at the AMP, an addition of this magnitude will certainly help quench the thirst of those wondering when the bigger names were going to be announced.
Not to downplay any of the previously announced bands by any means but in the past, the festival has seen names like Wilco and The Flaming Lips so for many, this should come as good news.
For those not in the know, The Black Crowes now feature Luther Dickinson on guitar. Luther is most famous for his other band, North Mississippi Allstars. Well, that and being the son of legendary musician/producer Jim Dickinson.
Other bands announced today include Gov’t Mule, Shpongle, Eat Static, Langhorne Slim, Cedric Burnside and Lightnin’ Malcolm, Jessie Baylin, Josh Phillips Folk Festival, Old School Freight Train, Hoots and Hellmouth, Wax Fang, Chuck Love, Public Property, My-Tea Kind and Radiohiro.
For a full list of the more than 60 artists performing at this year’s festival at Mulberry Mountain just outside of Ozark, Arkansas, head over to wakarusa.com.

So far, the only good band that I’ve seen on this list is Cedric Burnside and Lightin’ Malcom who are both amazing. The rest, well…

Just awesome. We are incredibly lucky to land a major national-level festival in our own backyard. The line-up is keen, and seems tailored to the wide range of music interests expressed locally, with Fayetteville favorites aplenty like Steve Kimock, Black Crowes, Warren Hanynes and Gov’t Mule, and Jimmy Herring of Widespread Panic. Incredible roster! So excited.
Listen to my radio show on KXUA and webcasting thru dgold.info/radio every Tuesday from now until Wakarusa Festival in June. I will be playing bands from the Wakarusa line-up every week on the Honest Tunes show. I’m working on an uninterrupted Wakarusa Preview Podcast mp3 as well.

Are you the dude who hosts the Pickin Post? On KUAF?
I wish that was a fulltime radio station of its own…

No, host for the Pickin’ Post show is Mike Shirkey. He runs the GoodFolk house concert series, too. Excellent tunes, no doubt.

His show reminds me of that awesome station in Austin that plays all the roots/country/alt country tunes. You never know what you’ll hear when you’re listening, and its about 99 percent awesome.

LOL TB. No I’m not Mike Shirkey of Good Folk and the Pickin’ Post. I’m a regular listener of his program tho. Isn’t it great! My show is Honest Tunes on KXUA 88.3 FM, the other local station also owned by UA. I play some bluegrass, folk, and roots music too (like the light of the Pickin’ Post), but my genres expand out into rock, blues, dance and jam music too.
We are incredibly lucky to have these radio stations of community diversity and freeform DJ’ing. Most cities are lucky to have 1 college or community radio station.
KUAF 91.3 has NPR news, then classical music most days. They have weekend shows of bluegrass, folk, jazz and blues. KXUA 88.3 is an eclectic college-radio rotation during the day, and turns to DJ specific genre shows after 6PM and weekends.

I suspect most people won’t recognize some of those names… but if Sphongle plans to play a live set complete with amazing flutist Raja Ram, and if Eat Static really is coming… I think I may just have to buy a ticket.
Dgold goes to Waka

You don’t even really want to recognize all the names. If you see several bands you know you’ll like, there’s a good chance that you can be introduced to a lot of new music you’ve never heard before. That diversity and depth (from well known headliners to underground up-and-comers) is what these “75 bands on 5 stages” eclectic festivals are about, whether it is Woodstock, Bonnaroo, Allgood, 10k Lakes, or Wakarusa. Over the years Waka has been one of the best as far as turning fans on to some of the best new bands just breaking-out.
Here’s a group I started on Last.FM for fellow fans of what Wakarusa has got going,

Don’t forget about the Waka Winter Classic tomorrow night at George’s! We get to send some of our own to Wakarusa in a “battle of the bands” setting!
Show starts @ 8 p.m., and everyone gets a ticket when they walk in the door. When they know who they want to vote for, they go to the Wakarusa table and put it in the envelope for that band. At the end of the night, the band with the most votes gets to play Wakarusa!
Here’s the line-up:
The Staggering Odds 8 – 8:45
Cletus Got Shot 9 – 9:45
Indiana & the Byrds 10 – 10:45
Copesetic 11 – 11:45
Hardaway & the Commoners 12 – 12:45
Winner will be announced around 1 a.m. after they’ve counted all the votes.
Come out and send your favorite band to Wakarusa!
