Weekend: March 27, 28, 29

March 27, 2009 9:20 am · By Dustin · 29 Comments

The weather this weekend is looking pretty lame, with a 60% chance of rain tonight, and another 60% chance of rain / snow (lame) tomorrow.

There’s also a 85% chance that work will suck today, because that one co-worker you have has seasonal depression, and is ticked about the weather, and so when the copier breaks (62% chance), and someone takes the last of the coffee without making a new pot (91% chance), there’s a 95% chance that they’re gonna take it out on you. Suck.

Luckily, there’s a 100% chance that the weekend is coming at around 5:00 today, and should last through sometime Sunday night, and that’s 200% awesome.

Tonight, if you were planning on checking out the Zach Brown Band at George’s, you’re probably outta luck because that show is already sold out. You can still get your George’s fix, though, by checking out the Bel Aires at happy hour.

The undefeated-in-conference-play Razorback baseball team is making their return to Baum stadium this weekend, with a three game series with the Mississippi State Bulldogs, that is, as long as the weather holds up.

Nebbia by Cirque Eloize is playing all weekend at the Walton Arts Center, which according to Todd, will “freak you out.” In a good way.

Saturday night, there’s a huge show at the Gypsy on College with Taproot, Dear Enemy, One less Reason, Adekin, and Without a Whisper.

In Midtown, you can check out St. Anthony, High Society, Daytona Florida at one of our new favorite venues, Cheers.

Also on Saturday, Cletus Got Shot will be having their CD release party at the Smoke and Barrel Tavern.

A compete (as far as we know) list of weekend activities are below. What are you guys doing this weekend?

I love how we have Midtown now. Has that always existed? And does that put the Gypsy in Midtown?

Midtown = North Street to Township. Some would throw in Arts Place and Tims, but I’m not so sure….

Does Midtown go all the way to Fiesta Square? I hope not.

Oh and there’s an Arsaga’s, too. And The Hardware Store.

Damn, Midtown really does rule.

La Huerto
Racha Thai

Fayetteville Cleaners, which rules.

Dang, before we lost the Movie Theater and Clunk, Midtown was even more awesome. We have two strip clubs, too.

When do we get the Dickson Street-ment? Imagine if Midtown had sidewalks….

The city is currently installing more sidewalks in the Greenvalley / Woodland Jr. High area. Walking, jogging, biking, etc from the poplar entrances of skull creek trail through to College is getting better.

I totally agree that Midtown should be a happening place moving forward. The future UAMS campus and the expansion of the Veterans hospital should also contribute great things to that area.

Gregory park… Quite the wooded green space tucked into the center of Fayetteville!

Let’s throw in Colt square and the Arkansas Yoga center because TB strikes me as a Yoga man.

Yep Midtown rules.

TB- Looks like the Memphis Pencils are playing at Cheers on Saturday. I added them to the list.

I never really thought of the midtown area as an entertainment district. I live on Mission and do some shopping around there… and maybe eat fast food, but there are quite a few things to do… much more than “mid to north town”. How is Cheers? I haven’t been in that building since it was a Mexican restaurant…

Yoga Center: Got a rubdown there once. Good rub.

Memphis Pencils Sat @ Cheers: Awesome.

Though I see it as a depressing-ish strip, most of my favorite restaurants are in Midtown. I guess I dislike it because it’s not pedestrian-friendly like downtown or South Fay (which is at least flat for biking). When you add up all the awesome stuff there (don’t forget the Reptile Museum) it sounds a lot better.

Total Bastard
March 27, 2009

Yep, the city should invest in some sidewalks around there. Its probably the least ped-friendly section of town. I think a stoplight at Poplar and College (or a sexy round-about) would do wonders for creating a more walkable environment. Drivers tend to pick up a lot of speed between Sycamore and Township.

I could see having some grub at Slim’s or Fog’s and walking down to a show at Gypsy if it were more ped-friendly. I wish the old theater would redevelop into something cool because right now its a big gap, and a depressing, stucco-covered half-done rehab.

I’m in Memphis Pencils and I know a couple other people that are too, and we were intending on playing at Cheers tonight.

Worst case scenario: you show up and you see some former Pencils rocking in St. Anthony along with some confused current Pencils enjoying their friends’ excellent set. We’ll all be prepared with a change of pants for High Society and Daytona as well.

Total Bastard

I just called Cheers and they said you ain’t playin tonight.

They also do not serve any kind of hard cider, fyi.

March 28, 2009

Yeah, it’s Memphis Pencils, High Society, and St. Antony. Sorry for any confusion. Daytona Florida will not be there because of illness. Everyone else will be there because of a different kind of illness. The good kind.

Man, about an hour after I confirmed that we were I found out we had some illness issues as well. Sorry to disappoint, but I’m sure you’ve realized that we grow like weeds around these parts. We’ll be back.

Barry
March 29, 2009

It was only two bands last night. I missed St. Antony but caught half of the High Society set. They’re every bit as good as the publication from which they got their name, and you don’t have to hide them under your mattress.
