April 15, 2009 12:45 pm · By Todd Gill · 85 Comments

The Wakarusa Music & Camping Festival is fast-approaching and if you haven’t gotten your tickets yet, we’re giving you an opportunity to win a pair here on the Flyer.

There are over 80 bands scheduled to play the four-day music festival and we wanna know who you’re most excited about. Is it The Black Crowes? Or maybe Gomez? Are you most psyched to see Fayetteville’s own Charliehorse on the bill?

How to enter
Alls ya gotta do is head over to the Wakarusa site and take a look at the entire 2009 lineup. Then come back here and leave a comment telling us who you wanna see most and why. That’s it!

What you’ll win
You’ll get two tickets to Wakarusa 2009 at Mulberry Mountain near Ozark, Arkansas. If you win, we’ll forward your name to the Wakarusa crew and you can pick up your tickets at Will Call on June 4th.

The rules (read ‘em up):

  1. Feel free to comment all you want but you’ll only be entered once. Cool?
  2. This contest is open to anyone anywhere except Fayetteville Flyer writers and their immediate family members.
  3. This contest is open until 5:00pm CST on Thursday, May 14th, 2009.
  4. Make sure you leave a valid e-mail address when filling out the comment form since that’s how we’ll contact you if you’ve won.
  5. You’ll have to provide us with your first and last name (if you win) and then be prepared to show a valid photo ID when picking up your tickets.

Thanks to Wakarusa for sponsoring this contest. For more information about the festival and to purchase tickets, visit wakarusa.com.

Saw The Black Crowes last year at the AMP and I’ve seen Cross Canadian Ragweed a million times. I really want to see Gov’t Mule. I’ve been listening to their big live album “The Deepest End” and they seem like one of those bands that just so much better live.

C’mon random contest winner generator – pick me.

Most Wanted = Buckethead, Matisyahu, PBS & STS9…..oh and David Hasselhoff on Acid just to see what the hell that is all about.

I found something to help sample the Waka bands. Go to Pandora and scroll down to the bottom of the main screen. Click on “Music Festival Guide” and find Wakarusa Radio. It will play all songs from this years Waka lineup….fo’ free. Super cool? You’re damn right it is.

Its gotta be STS9. I saw them recently in STL and they melted my face off. You may think, “damn, that sucks”. Actually it doesn’t. It is the coolest thing ever. I am so freaking pumped about STS9 lighting up the Ozarks, please give me a chance to go.

How can one pick who they’re the MOST excited about!? I want to see Railroad Earth and Galactic b/c they are old time fav.s! Kimock b/c he’s always a great show, and Matisyahu and Gomez b/c I haven’t seen them before and am excited to get the chance to check em out…I mean come on….an (is it a or an there?) chasidic rapper? I can’t wait! That is….if you pick me!!

Thanks for the tip about Pandora George! Awesome!!

April 15, 2009

Please don’t consider me for the contest, because I already have my tickets/passes/whatever they are, but…

I’m actually really pumped about Blue Mountain. Always have loved alt-country, and as one of the bands who helped defined the genre, I’ve always wanted to catch them.

Other highlights for me will be JJ Grey & Mofro (blew me away live at George’s in February) and Split Lip Rayfield. Because they’re awesome, that’s why.

April 15, 2009

The Black Crowes!!! Chris Robinson makes me swoon.

Me
April 15, 2009

As far as the bands go, I’d have to go with Galactic and Mofro because they are awesome and I haven’t been able to make it to one of their live shows yet. I think the real draw is the atmosphere though and supporting such a huge event in Arkansas.

I would absolutely put a fireball in my pants to see matisyahu. I cant help but throw my hands in the air when I listen to him. *I only throw my hands in the air when I hear marvelous music*

Oh man, so many good acts…

Simon Posford is not to be missed, all of his acts are solid gold. He’ll be playing a Shpongle DJ set. I’ve seen Shpongle (and a couple of his other acts: Hallucinogen & Younger Brother) a few times now… amazing. Eat Static is playing a live PA on two nights, which will be NUTS. They are an amazing psytrance act, and they hardly ever play in the US.

STS9 is a fantastic jamtronic act. They don’t even really have any set tracks. They just kind of make it up on the fly using live looping.

The Egg is a great band as well. I caught them at George’s last October, and they laid down the jams.

Pretty Lights is a really sweet downtempo electronic act.

One that I’m really excited to see is Ott. He’s one of my favorite psydub artists ever, and I’ve not had the opportunity to see him play yet. Seriously, this is going to be great.

Basically, everyone playing the “Interstellar Meltdown” portion of the festival are really top shelf electronic acts. Its quite the lineup. I think everyone will really enjoy the crowd that psy acts will bring out as well, especially to people that have never been to a psy party. They are some of the most loving, caring folks you’ll ever meet.

Wow. I can’t wait.

Changeling
April 16, 2009

Woopsie, I had a brain fart there… EOTO does the on the fly live looping w/o any real set list, not STS9 (though they do some similar stuff). STS9 is incredible as well.

I want to see government mule, they are the best band in the nation pound for pound and they can mix it up with the best of them. Also they are the toughest sob’s on the lineup and they will call for all leprecauns to come out of their hiding in arkansas to support them. rock the house government mule yahoooooo

April 16, 2009

Wakarusa is going to be redonkulous this year. I can not wait to see Yonder Mountain and STS9. Other acts not to be missed include: Gov’t Mule, Les Claypool, Gomez, G Love, Matisyahu, Buckethead, Galactic, JJ Grey & Mofro, Lucero, Split Lip Rayfield, Trombone Shorty, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, Cornmeal, and Big Smith. The Interstellar Meltdown is going to be magical on top of Mulberry Mountain!

I am so happy the promoters had to change the location from Lawrence, KS to Mulberry. It is going to a weekend full of peace, love, and music. We need to give this event the support that it needs so that we can continue to host this spectacular festival. It is time for NWA to get its jam on…

I’m not excited one bit about any of the performers, just excited that it is going to be in our neighborhood and will hopefully put NW on the minds of more performers as a tour stop. I still want the tickets to give to friends.

What’s my motivation here?… I would like to see as many of these groups as I can in Fayetteville’s back yard, and do a one-knee chug while I do it; just like I do in my own back yard.

STS9. Or Railroad Earth. Orrr Pretty Lights. Why? Because I’m packing my dancing shoes and I plan on wearing them.
We are in for a treat, Arkansas.

April 17, 2009

Oh man! I will have to just put in highlights here! I wanna see Gov’t Mule, Yonder Mountain String Band, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Railroad Earth, Cornmeal, Dirtfoot and Madahoochi just because every time any of them have played close by, we’ve had a gig somewhere else! And I have to add Split Lip Rayfield because they’re AWESOME, and My-Tea Kind and Elephant Revival because they’re great people AND great musicians. I also would love to see The Black Crowes, and like George said, David Hasselhof on Acid just because of the name…

Geez, maybe it would have been easier to list who I wouldn’t want to see!

OhDannyBoy
April 17, 2009

For me…Matisyahu

April 17, 2009

David Hasselhoff on Acid sounds like a pretty promising name…or maybe the opposite…or maybe both.
Yonder Mountain String band travels around and around and around and I have yet to see them. This predicament needs to change quick! I would love to see them

April 19, 2009

the black crowes, hands down. i saw them in an outdoor concert in heavy rain a couple years ago and i’ve always thought if there were one concert i would love to do over it’d be them. even people who aren’t into their music can’t help but love their show. i stuck around in the rain for it. just go, wont regret it.

Eclectic festivals like Wakarusa bring so many different types of music that I want to see, back-to-back, shaking it up (it’s like exercise for the ears & brain, as well as the dancing). I like to bounce back and forth seeing as many of the bands as possible, and of course focusing on some highly anticipated favorites. For the Fayetteville Flyer Waka Contest, I will name all the artists who are on the roster of Wakarusa 2009, who have appeared live on my radio show at KXUA Fayetteville, Honest Tunes webcast archives, because it was really an honor and a thrill to interview them, and to see they’re still coming around our region to play shows:

Of all the bands to choose from at Wakarusa this year I would have to say…ALL OF THEM. What a ridiculously awesome lineup. I’m especially excited about Railroad Earth and Split Lip. Being a Fayetteville native, I’ve had the opportunity to see hundreds of Jambands over the years and it’s easy to get excited about this festival. I attended the 1st Waka in Lawrence and it will be nice to have this wonderful festival so close to home. Waka and Harvest, both in the Ozarks. Life is good.

I am most looking forward to seeing EOTO and STS9! These feet are made for dancing and that is what I intend to do! Kinda disappointed the festival will not be in Kansas, but I am certain the weather will be lovely on those Arkansas nights.
I will also be excited to see Matisyahu. He has heart and a kind soul vibe. :-)

Unquestionably, beyond any shadow of a doubt, STS9. The Tribe brings the heat unlike any band currently in existence. The 2 late night bender sets they are chalked up for will be mindblowing. Can only hope they decide to bring the heat like the did at Bonnaroo when they played ’till the sun came up. Cannot wait.

i can’t wait to see my-tea kind! i saw them a couple of years ago at my second wakarusa, and i loved them! my friend and i spent the entire time dancing to their music, and afterward bought their cds. it was a great time, and i know they will bring the fun again this year!

Jess
May 6, 2009

Definately STS9, Les Claypool, and Buckethead. I can’t wait for Wakarusa. I have the best time every year!

Ashley
May 6, 2009

I’ve got to see Gov’t Mule! I’ve been listening to Warren Hayens since I was born, following him from the Allman Brothers Band to now. When I was eight we spent a summer at their concerts, setting out lawn chairs to hear their insane solos. My entire family is obsessed, as well as I, and to see Gov’t Mule live once again would be a blessing. They came to Tulsa this year to play, and I had tickets; however, there were tornadoes and my father wouldn’t risk driving at night. I missed my opportunity, but getting to check them out at Wakarusa would more than make up for it!

Michael Murphy
May 6, 2009

I’m really excited to see Shpongle. The duo live is apparently amazing. The sight of an old man dancing across stage in a surreal mask is something that no person can go through life without seeing. Let me die knowing I lived a wholesome life. Let me die happy.

My family of 5 are major BUCKETHEAD fans! We’ve been to the last 3 Wakarusas in Kansas. Me, my husband and my 3 kids- Emerald, 17, Forrest, 13, and Hunter, 11, wear matching Buckethead t-shirts made by my daughter (Buckethead For President last year!) and wait early so we can be in the front. This year we have to buy 4 tickets, which is almost $700. This is a hardship since I can’t find a full time job and my daughter is graduating from high school. Talk about expensive. Give her the best graduation present ever, please! We are excited about the new venue and the great line-up. Thanks so much for considering us!

May 12, 2009

My favorite artist is either Les Claypool or Buckethead. Les is such a unique and talented person, his voice and music style are so different and fun. He is not afraid to try new and unusual things with his music or his appearence and he inspires me to be more out there. Buckethead on the other hand is so awesome to watch on stage. All of his different talents including his ability to play guitar like no one else are so amazing to see.

Matisyahu. I have been a longtime fan and saw him once in St. Louis. I got on stage and then afterwards went back stage. I was a little tipsy and showed off my beatboxing skills to the whole band. (I have no idea how to beat-box and it, Im sure was hilarious to watch me) They all joined in, including Matisyahu, and we hung out for a while. It was so awesome and I would love to see him live again!
