The 2009 NAMA Winners

By Dustin · April 24, 2009 11:58 am · 20 Comments

Holy crap. There are a lot of bands in Fayetteville. Like, a whole lot. About a zillion.

Last night, several of them were on hand for the 14th annual Northwest Arkansas Music awards, and some of them won! Great job.

The Dickson Theater was as packed as we’ve ever seen it for the NAMA’s this year, and if the support for the event is any indication of the health of the music scene in Fayetteville, I’d say it is well on the road to recovery.

Mayor Lioneld Jordan made an official announcement declaring April 23rd Northwest Arkansas Musicians day, and called Fayetteville’s musicians “the best in Northwest Arkansas” (duh). Jarris, Kory Montgomery, Cletus Got Shot, and Souled Out performed about 3 songs each between awards, and there was more dancing at this years NAMA’s than I’ve seen in a really long time. It was a good night.

Benjamin Del Schreve swept the awards last year, and walked away with 3 more NAMA’s for his NAMA collection last night, including Best Male Vocalist (band), best Power Pop, and Band of the Year. BDS was on hand earlier in the night, but the band was playing in Fort Smith, and missed the awards portion of the night.

Several of the winners were absent, but I suppose if you’re out playing music, that’s a pretty good excuse.

Best album went to Trout Fishing in America for last year’s Big Round World release. Best singer / songwriters were Ben Rector, and Opal Fly. Best indie band was the Memphis Pencils.

Who’s Ben Rector? And why does everyone love BDS? I mean…really?

Congrats Fayetteville, your music scene is alive and well.

Rector? Damn near killed her.

BDS has an appealing sound for the mass audience. (that wasn’t a compliment)

Any metal-ish band that throws up the horns should get their fingers chopped off. Sorry, that’s just the way I feel.

I say we just make a Benjamin Del Shreve award. Perhaps it will simplify things.

“Most fedoras/vests worn in a 365 day period”
But seriously….is Rector a solo act or is he in a band? The name isn’t familiar to me.

After seeing all the horns in the slide show, I couldn’t help but think of:

I think Ben Rector usually plays with a band, but the act is pretty much just him. He’s a regular up at the UA, he’s been in the top 3 in the battle of the bands for a few years now, so he gets some shows on campus now and then. I occasionally see his name on the George’s marquee. I’d call him singer/songwriter-style in the vein of Jason Mraz or something.

a. brown, lets go one step further and make an award for bands that are named after the singer. ehh? ehh?

Waitaminute – was Garth the last guy in the slideshow? Did he leave Wayne to be a solo act?

Ben Rector is legit. Half Ben Folds, half Ben Kweller, half (I agree with Reed) Jason Mraz. I know that is three halves. Just sayin’.

@bryce – That is a superliciously awesomrific website! Thanks for that.

They should definitely have a BDS award. Give him the lifetime achievement on the condition that he never play Fayetteville again.

I like beebs’ idea too. We could call it the Alan Parsons Project Award or maybe just the Bon Jovi.

No, that was the dude from salute your shorts..

Too bad about this Ben Rector. One Jason Mraz was already one too many. Was A Good Fight there, and were they wearing their patented matching outfits and emotional hairdos? I also love the orange pylon cones on the tattered red carpet, a real touch of class.

Also, how many ambient bands were included among the Indie/Ambient nominees? I wasn’t aware there was a big ambient scene in Northwest Arkansas, but apparently it’s big enough to share billing with the Indie groups.

@dgold Did you (or anybody) get the impromptu duet with Darlene during the acceptance speech of (forgive me for not remembering who he was or what band he was with…) on video? That was swweeettt, and needs to be shared with the world…!

The Truth

@Anna It was J.D. Paul, formerly of Apartment 5. He moved to NYC and is no longer with the band, but that’s who he was.

And: Yes, it was pretty sweet.

Thanks for posting this! With so much bad news being posted it’s good to see some positivity!!!! Everyone wants to hate. yeah, I’d like to see them go triple DIAMOND, sell 35 millions records, right? exactly.

This is the BEST news I’ve ever heard…in my entire life. The one band that actually improved people’s lives by giving them a second Christ to look up to and give true hope that life can be worth living! Scott Stapp will be remembered as the songwriter of our generation, not to mention easily the best SHOW of our Millenia! Even his National Anthem soars skyscraper-height over Aretha’s inaugural rendition! I love Aretha, who doesn’t, but Scott dominates… and we should bestow upon him the honor and rock-god glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Officially,
