Contest: Win Levon Helm tickets and dinner at Ella’s
In exactly one month, a van will be parked outside the Walton Arts Center and crews will be ushering in equipment for one heckuva show. Somewhere not far away, the legendary Levon Helm will be drinking a coffee or having a bagel or whatever it is he does in the morning before a concert. With any luck, he’ll be right across the street at Common Grounds and a few Fayettevillians will score a chance to meet him.
Speaking of scoring sweet chances, we’ve rounded up a pair of tickets to the show and are giving ‘em away along with a $50 gift certificate to Ella’s Restaurant. In other words, if you win, Thursday June 18 will be a pretty great night.
How to enter
This one’s fairly simple. Just leave a comment on this post telling us why you deserve to win. Is it because you’re a fan on Levon? A fan of Ella’s? A fan of pretty great nights? It’ll be a random drawing and you can only enter once but our favorite entry of the bunch will be counted as three entries. Have at it.
What you’ll win
You’ll get two tickets to the Thursday June 18 performance of Levon Helm at 8pm in the Walton Arts Center and a $50 gift certificate from Ella’s Restaurant.
A few rules (read ‘em carefully):
- You may only enter this specific contest once.
- This contest is open to anyone anywhere except Fayetteville Flyer writers and their immediate family members.
- Contest is open until 11:59pm CST on Sunday, May 24, 2009.
Make sure you leave a valid e-mail address when filling out the comment form since that’s how we’ll contact you if you’ve won. - You’ll have to provide us with your first and last name (if you win) and then be prepared to show a valid photo ID when picking up your tickets.
Thanks to Thirty-Third Street LLC, Stratton Entertainment and Ella’s Restaurant for sponsoring this contest. For more information about this performance and to purchase tickets, visit waltonartscenter.org or call 479-443-5600.

I want the tickets, because I mostly love great nights, and I like The Band, but I also thought the Last Waltz was a great movie!
By Tracy on May 18th, 2009
I NEED the tickets because I am a Band addict (in spite of getting made fun of for it by friends).

I love Levon and even more so love a great safe night on Dickson street, listening to great music, eating great food and a nice glass of wine. I can sing evey word to every song he plays so my crowd participation is like none other, I bring great energy to every venue. Plus this would up my chances for a date, cause who could resist a FREE dinner and great music?? I really need this ego boost – however small it may be!!! GIVE IT TO ME!
By Beebs on May 18th, 2009
Great nights are OK i guess but i really want to go because I’d love to take my Dad to that show since he turned me on to the Last Waltz.

I have no idea who Levon Helm is, but I like things and/or people that are described as legendary. It’s a very good descriptor. I also enjoy things that are free, including but not limited to: music, food, and booze.

I should have dinner with Levon Helm because I KNOW he’s right about who wrote the Band songs. I also need to interview him for my dissertation. No, really, I do.
By Sardon on May 18th, 2009
I should win because I love Levon, and I knew his parents, Diamond and Nell. Besides, I haven’t seen him since the death of our mutual friend Rick Danko.
BTW, if you meet Lee don’t bring up that Last Waltz thing. He’s still sore about it not having enough Robbie in it, as Ronnie Hawkins commented after he saw it.
Also, I’m not afraid of Dickson Street. In fact, back when it was really scary I lived there. We were the people your parents warned us about.

Sorry to say it is not dinner WITH Levon, but it’s still a great dinner and two tickets for the the Levon show. Have you listened to “Dirt Farmer” yet. Amazing.

mark is right. The winner most definitely will not be eating with Levon, unless of course, you’ve got way bigger connections than us. Whoever wins will be lucky but not that lucky.
By hogsbreath on May 18th, 2009
I deserve to win because my wife is pregnant and won’t “let me” buy awesome concert tickets because i should save, save, save. If I win tickets, then I win all around. Dirt Farmer is on repeat in my office.

It was 1970 as best I can remember and I lived in Little Rock. I was in the 10th grade and was just graduating from Memphis and Motown soul music to some of the heavier sounds that KAAY and maybe KLAZ were exposing us to. I liked alot of it. The Woodstock album had given us a great taste of the sounds of different groups with a really wide range of styles and influences. I listened over and over. Especially Joe Cocker, Crosby, Stills and Nash and Santana. But even though I loved it, I didn’t really feel like I was a part of itsomehow. Then I heard “Up on Cripple Creek” from The Band on the radio. I immediately bought the album. It was like nothing I had ever heard, yet it was immediately my music. It was coming from a place I was coming from. A place I had always been. I can’t explain that. All I know is that the Band has never been very far out of my music rotaotion for very long. That’s why I have been to see Levon about 25 times and why I am going again. His new music is just as good too.

I deserve to win because my balls itch. There’s not really anything wrong with me (i hope). It’s just one of those things. You see, I’m not worthy 3 entries…but thanks for the 1.
By Zaff on May 18th, 2009
I want to win these tickets because Levon Helm is not only a living legend, but also an Arkansan! As a somewhat young person, I feel I have been deprived of truly great music. A chance to see Levon would magical and give me a rare chance to see a legend in my own backyard.
Great times are cool too.
By chancevb on May 18th, 2009
I should win because I just checked my magic 8 ball and it said, “chancevb will win tickets to see an amazing performance (including a gift certificate for a great dinner) on Thursday, June 18th.**” I thought that was a pretty crazy message when I saw it this morning, but then I saw that ya’ll are having this contest…and it all makes sense.
**Exact quote is what was printed on the little triangle that looks like it’s glowing blue sometimes inside my 8ball.

My husband’s brother, John Embree, has opened for Levon’s band twice at the Midnight Ramble at Levon’s barn in Woodstock, NY. The Ramblers (John’s band) is one of only 3 bands to be invited back for a second time since Levon started the jam. John is living in New York and my husband Dave really misses him…what better way to be reminded of his little brother than to go see the band he plays with? AND my husband’s 30th birthday is just days before. What a great 30ht birthday surprise this would be!

I need an outlet to celebrate the resignation of FatCat PatFish. What better place than the WAC? oh yeah, and Levon is pretty great.

If you know of Levon Helm, you probably have heard of Turkey Scratch…that is Levon’s and my hometown. My great-grandparents actually took Levon (and his sister) to their very first “concert”, which was a talent show at the State Fair. Since my great-grandparents were the only ones with a car to get them to Little Rock at the time, they drove them over to the show. Levon played the 5 gallon buckets for drums and his sister sang, I believe. They made it to the finals and took them back the 2nd night, where they won! I would love to be able to experience the Dirt Farmer’s new stuff live, especially having a farm still in Turkey Scratch!!!

Coal Miner’s Daughter: When Loretta was fixin’ to marry Dolittle, Levon, in his role as Mr. Webb told her, “Don’t do it, Loretty, don’t throw all them young years away. You’re my shinin’ pride, girl.”
Well, it just doesn’t get any better than that. And my life would be pretty much complete if I could see the guy who delivered those lines so perfectly.
By kasey on May 18th, 2009
I blew all my money on getting hitched so its our only hope to get tickets to the show
By Me on May 18th, 2009
I deserve to win because I love winning things. So deserving…
By Total Bastard on May 18th, 2009
I should win because my dad grew up listening to Mr. Helm, rat-cheer in Fayetteville, and because he actually mentioned that he and I should go.
Which is weird.
By mel5545 on May 18th, 2009
I’ve heard he’s excellent, legendary perhaps. I haven’t heard any of his music though. Send me. He needs new fans, right?

Check out http://www.levonhelm.com and see the video feature on Levon’s new album “Electric Dirt”. That will inspire some creative writing….

I love The Band. and I adore Levon. Enough said.
By stacy on May 19th, 2009
I used to play in a band named after a song by the band “jupiter hollow”
therefore I deserve to win.
By Dgold on May 19th, 2009
I deserve to win the tickets because I see what you did there. Always switching up the contest rules. I see what you did there, you Fayetteville Flyer you.

I am of that generation, yes , I’m old. But I have a 20 year old daughter who absolutely LOVES Levon Helm, as do I, and would be so thrilled if I took her to see him. She has moved on to her own life now, and I miss her greatly. This would be a great night for the two of us.
By moondawg on May 19th, 2009
I saw Levon and the Band (without Robbie but WITH the Cate Brothers) in an AMAZING show at the Rink almost 25 years ago, and it’s about damned time I get to hear him again! Thank you.
By Innarested Observer on May 19th, 2009
Because I want to cry tears of joy when I hear Levon sing “The Weight.”
By zh on May 19th, 2009
cause levon once touched my leg, and i still tell that story to this day.
By Jessy Lang on May 20th, 2009
I have never seen Levon play and I have never had dinner at Ella’s so I don’t know if I deserve to win more than anyone else, but it sure would be awesome if I did! There is a first time for everything, right?
By commentguy on May 21st, 2009
Because this would be the perfect time to propose to my girlfriend, I’ve been thinking about it for a long time and just recently bought the ring. I’ve been trying to figure out how and win, and winning this would give an answer to both. This would be a night we’d remember for the rest of our lives.

Because Atlatic City is one my favorite songs.
