Andy’s Frozen Custard opens today

Driving down College Ave. this afternoon, I noticed a bunch of people gathered in front of Andy’s Frozen Custard, in the building that used to be Oseguera’s on College Avenue. A couple of them were holding a really big pair of scissors.

Aha. Ribbon cutting.

Andy’s is a franchise of frozen custard shops from Springfield, Missouri. This is their third store opening in Arkansas, with the two other locations being in Rogers and Jonesboro. It was started by Andy’s dad in 1986 in Osage Beach, Missouri, and Andy’s parents named the first store after him. I met Andy at the grand opening today.

The new Fayetteville store is owned by the Powell Family, who also own the Rogers store.

These people don’t mess around either. That building was a pink, abandoned Oseguera’s just a couple months ago.

I had a strawberry concrete that was pretty dang delicious. Anyone ever had Andy’s frozen custard before?

I love Andy’s. I always get the hot fudge concrete made from choc.

Two comparable custard shops on the same street and STILL no Indian restaurant in F-ville. I don’t understand the business strategy.

@Gina:

I kinda think its a bad location. One must drive past Maggie Moo’s and Shakes to get there from most parts of Faytown. But nobody asked me.

I am on a health kick, so I won’t be going there.

What exactly is the difference between custard and ice cream?

By reed on May 20th, 2009

More egg, as I understand it.

By Gina on May 20th, 2009

I’d forgotten Maggie Moo’s is out there, too! Jeez.

Custard is much denser and creamier than ice cream (hella butterfat and egg yolks)…less air is whipped into it.

Ah ha. (Wikipedia:)

-Both desserts are blended with air in processing. Custard is 15% air while ice cream is 50% air. Custard is frozen more quickly, minimizing air and creating smaller ice crystals.
-Custard is made with egg yolk as well as cream and sugar. Apparently ice cream ain’t got no egg.

Andy’s is addictive it’s so good.

By Total Bastard on May 21st, 2009

Do they sell anything besides custard?

By Scott Stapp of Creed on May 21st, 2009

They sell sorbet too, but they put lard in it.

It’s people! Frozen custard is made out of people!

By bryce on May 21st, 2009

Andy’s Soylent Green would probably be a huge hit.

By Total Bastard on May 22nd, 2009

There’s tons of ice cream places, and not a single place to get Soylent Green in this town.

I really don’t understand the business strategy.

By David Franks on May 22nd, 2009

When all is said and done, we are all Soylent Green. That’s hard to compete with.

I always try to stop at the Springfield Andy’s. I love the “Woody P Snowmonster” which has strawberries and chocolate. Their menu seems broader than Shakes.
