The campaign to get Bobby Petrino on Twitter
If you are tired of hearing about Twitter, do yourself a favor, and click the back button on your browser, stat.
Still here? Cool. Over the past 3 months, we’ve seen everything from a tweeting juror, controversy over a tweeting city alderman, people calling twitter rude, letters to the editor blaming twitter for car accidents, and just about every other possible news angle for a story about the service that all of a sudden, everyone wants to give their opinion on.
On Sunday, Brandon Marcello of the Northwest Arkansas Times introduced a new angle for a Twitter story when he made his plea to University of Arkansas head football coach Bobby Petrino to begin using the service.
In this day and age when coaches live a reclusive life in the presence of the media, a little peek behind the scenes – even when filtered – allows fans to feel connected to their favorite football or basketball program.
We're in. Although I don't necessarily agree with Marcello that I'd want to know what Bobby Petrino is having for lunch, I wouldn't mind hearing how quarterback Ryan Mallet is progressing in Petrino's offensive scheme, or how Michael Smith's injury rehabilitation is progressing. I'd also love to know when Petrino had a speaking engagement that I might be able to attend, or who Bobby's player of the game is when we beat the crap out of Ole Miss next year.
All of these things could be accomplished in 140 characters or less, and would add value and interest to the Football program. I also agree with Marcello's assessment that having Petrino participate on Twitter may help recruiting.
Also, as Marcello points out, newly hired Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari has over 40,000 followers on his Twitter account, and coaches like Pete Carroll, Lane Kiffin, Mark Richt, Urban Meyer, and others are using the service effectively to keep fans informed, and further interested in their respective programs.
Petrino has a Twitter account established by the U of A sports information staff that is reserved should he get the notion to start tweeting. Toward the end of his story, Marcello issued a plea to Razorback fans to follow Petrino anyway, and maybe once he sees the demand, he'll see the benefit in using the service.
We were follower #301 a few minutes ago. You can follow the account that the U of A created for Mr. Petrino here.
What do you think, America? Should Bobby Petrino use Twitter?
