Do you garden?

I love this time of year.

It’s technically Spring, but the really rainy part is over (OK, this week looks a little rainy but still), and it’s not so hot that it’s unbearable to be outside. Especially in the mornings and the evenings, the weather in Fayetteville is absolutely perfect right now.

On Sunday, I spent the entire day taking advantage of this awesome weather by working on the landscaping in my front yard. I planted some Lily’s, some Hosta’s, some Begonia’s, and a few mystery plants that I just liked the looks of. It was a new garden so I had to dig out the grass with a shovel, and we lined it with red bricks, and then filled it in with the plants.

It was a ton of work, and my hands and back are still sore from all the digging, but there is something incredibly rewarding about spending the day in the sun, sweating, choosing your combination of plants, and getting your hands dirty in your own garden.

There were several people in my neighborhood working in the yard on Sunday, and the parking lot at Westwood Gardens on Wedington was packed, so I wondered, do Flyer readers garden? Do you grow herbs? Vegetables? Flowers? Strawberries?

I’d love to see what you guys are growing. If you have a particularly sweet garden, feel free to post a link to some pictures in the comments.

I would garden if I wasn’t a renter. I find it to be calming and relaxing.

I was inspired by Flyer Foodie to plant my own strawberry patch over the weekend. Then after a trip to the Botanical Gardens, I was inspired to plant a few flowers as well. Thanks Fayetteville!

My landlord is totally awesome, so we garden while we rent. Currently we have a raised bed with lettuce (it’s about done), herbs of all sorts, swiss chard, zuchinni, yellow squash, bell peppers, eggplant and bananna peppers. And then there are the flower pots and the topsy tuvy…

You might say we garden.

Working in the garden is one of my favorite things.

Definitely all about the garden. At home (I, too, rent from an awesome landlord) I’ve got all the classic herbs, tomatoes, squash, green bells, strawberries, and a few types of mushrooms. I also have a bigger plot away from home with a few hundred raspberry plants (see you at the market later this summer), as well as more herbs, tomatoes, melons, zucchini, carrots, greens, radishes, okra, cucumbers, green beans, etc.

Was anyone else set back big time with all that rain we had in May? It kept me out during the best 2.5 weeks I had for planting, so a lot of my plants are still little guys.

Reed, I was a little set back. However I put down a bit of blood meal to up the nitrogen in the soil and my garden practically exploded.

Has anyone tried the fertilizer from the Nitron store in Johnson? I can’t remember the name of it because it’s a letter/number combo.

I spent all day Sunday building a flagstone planter. I can’t wait to fill it in! I’m looking for something to keep with the Southwestern theme I have going on.

I’ve got a couple types of bell peppers, some herbs, tomatoes, lettuce, carrots, zucchini and jalapeno peppers. I’ll be moving soon, probably before any of the veggies (besides the herbs) actually start producing, but I’m not bummed about it because I’ve enjoyed working out in the garden so much.
Hopefully, my next landlord will be as cool as this one and I can start a garden next year.

I garden with @reed. He’s my upstairs neighbor. We’re about to have chickens and bees, too. Did I mention we live a block off of Dickson?

I’m a renter, so I mostly have potted plants. Currently I have some black and red elephant ears, asparagus ferns, hostas (that bloomed this morning?), sweet potato vines, green onions, black mondo grass, mint, basil, citronella, and Korean ferns. So far so good this year.

My husband & I rent too, and we have about 7 beds going right now. Want to bust the backbreaking work? Try “lasagna” gardening. Pick a spot, lay down a bunch of cardboard & soak it well with water. Layer with compost & soil and add your plants & mulch. Instant garden! The cardboard kills the grass & weeds underneath, but will eventually breakdown & allow your plants to root. I know several people who are doing this right now. Especially renters! Do a You Tube search for lasagna gardening for more info.
