To-do: Thursday 6/18
If you don’t already have tickets to tonight’s show at the Walton Arts Center, you’re out of luck because it’s sold out. If your name is Jessy Lang, you never had to worry because you won tickets. If your name is Levon Helm, you’ll be on stage performing.
So what are those with no Levon tickets doing tonight?
Opal Fly would be a good choice. She’s at Smoke & Barrel as always on Thursday nights as is the drag show at Tangerine.
There’s also a benefit show at the UARK Bowl & Ballroom featuring Darren Ray & The Basics as well as a silent auction and an electric guitar raffle. Proceeds go towards the leukemia fund for local Patrick Rush.
If you’d rather be outside, the Gulley Park Summer Concert Series has music each Thursday night through August 6th. Tonight’s entertainment is The Jack Mitchell Band.
Other stuff too:
Botanical Garden of the Ozarks: Third Thursday Garden Walk – 6pm
Fayetteville Farmers’ Market: On the Square (7am-2pm), Mill District (4pm-7pm)
Foghorn’s on College: Darren Ray
George’s: Sarah Hughes Band

I thought that Charliehorse was playing tonight at Party on the Patio (Powerhouse)?

So….how was the show last night?

I went. It was ok. I am not a huge fan. Levon was sick and didn’t even sing. The Cate Bros filled in some of the missing pieces, and played on most of The Band tunes. The show started 40 minutes late, and so all in all, it was just ok.
I’m sure if I was older and more nostalgic, I would have enjoyed it more.

I heard he didn’t sing in LR either. I have a feeling that I would be upset to pay $125 and not hear the star sing. But, alas, I couldn’t pay that much…so, I’m sour grapes anyway.

He didn’t even sing??? And people paid that much money??? LOL. That’s great. I hope he sat there smoking cigarettes and smiling smugly during the show. He’d be the Liam Gallagher of Americana and my new hero.

Nope, I hear some people were pissed too. I am not old enough to really have known what to expect so I can’t say I was really let down. He didn’t sit there smoking, he sat there playing the drums and blowing his nose.

I guess that the story is that Levon lost his voice from pushing too hard on this tour, which given the fact that he came back from throat cancer just a couple of years ago and wasn’t supposed to ever sing again, is not too surprising. Hearing about it reminded me of a story my dad told about a Jerry Lee Lewis show at the victory theatre in Rogers in the early 60s. Jerry Lee was late, nobody had heard from him, (he finally showed up 4 hours late and stinking drunk) so they called this popular local band to fill in, led by a couple of young guys, twin brothers in fact…
