World Cup Soccer in Fayetteville?

Months ago, we read that Razorback stadium was being considered as a possible location for the 2018 or 2022 World Cup.

Of course, first the United States has to get the bid to host the World Cup, and then Razorback Stadium has to be selected from one of the 70 possible locations to host matches. Not very likely. Right?

Well, the field of possible locations has been narrowed to 45 potential cities as of Tuesday of this week, and Fayetteville is still on the list.

There’s a long way to go before we’ll know if there will actually be a World Cup Match played in Fayetteville, and an even longer way to go before any actual futbol is played at Razorback Stadium, but it does appear that there’s an outside chance that 78,000 hooligans will one day fill the home of the Razorbacks to cheer on their favorite World Cup team.

I for one would be super excited to see World Cup Soccer in Fayetteville, and if we did get the bid to host a match, I think we’ve got a pretty great venue for it. It would also be huge for our city, and would go a long way toward putting us on the international map (right now, my globe just has a dot by Little Rock). The question is, do you think it will ever happen? Is there a chance we’ll see World Cup Soccer in Fayetteville in 2018 or 2022?

I think it says a lot about how the area has expanded that we are still on the list of possible sites. But I don’t really think we’ll make the final cut.

I don’t think we’ll make it either. But I would definitely attend if it happened.

if you read the linked article, it mentions that even if the USA won the bid to host, they wouldn’t announce the venue until about 5 years prior. so if it is the 2022 World cup, we won’t even find out for another 8 years….
