Fayetteville athletes headed to the Junior Olympics

Fayetteville has seen its share of incredible athletes over the years. World class Olympic sprinter Wallace Spearmon and Utah Jazz guard Ronnie Brewer are just two of the athletes that graduated from Fayetteville High School to go on and make a name for themselves on a national level recently.

In a couple weeks, four 14-15 year old ladies from right here in Fayetteville will be making us proud on a national stage, when Jessica Boyd, Sydney Conley, Anna Nastasi and Brianna Robinson travel to Des Moines, IA to compete in the National AAU Junior Olympics on August 1st.

Sydney Conley is the daughter of former University of Arkansas triple jumper and Olympic gold medalist Mike Conley, Sr., and the sister of Memphis Grizzlies star Mike Conley, Jr.

Haley House and Shelby Newell from just down the road in Gravette will also be representin’.

The team is sponsored by the Donald W. Reynolds Boys and Girls Club, and are coached by former Razorback track standout and Olympian Calvin Davis.

The Junior Olympics begin on July 27th, with the Track and Field portion taking place on August 1st at Drake University’s Jim Duncan Track in Des Moines.

The qualifiers and their events are as follows:

  • 400m Relay – Jessica Boyd, Sydney Conley, Haley House and Anna Nastasi. (2nd – 49.41)
  • Long Jump – Sydney Conley (3rd – 16-11.25) and Shelby Newell (4th – 16-07.25)
  • 100m Dash – Sydney Conley (1st – 12.25)
  • High Jump – Shelby Newell ( 1st – 4-11.00) and Brianna Robinson (3rd – 4-08.75)

Congrats ladies. We know you’ll make us proud.
