To-do: Monday 8/10

The Smoke & Barrel Tavern will be packed tonight. El Paso’s Zechs Marquise is playing and if you’re unfamiliar with them, here’s your chance to get acquainted.

The band is named after a character from a popular Japanese anime series but they’re also known for sharing a band member (and two family members) with The Mars Volta. Yes, that Mars Volta. Regardless of both trivia nuggets, however, Zechs Marquise’s music is fantastic.

For details on the band, check out this recent Fishpork interview. For details on the music, check out their MySpace page. For details on their live show, come on out and watch them tonight. See you there?

If prog rock isn’t your thing, there are other options. Take these, for example:

Ameroplace: TIMBER!, Focus Group, Falcon Buddies
Gypsy on College: Jovan Arellano
The Perk: Open acoustic jam
Pesto Cafe: Darren Ray
Powerhouse: Monday night open jam
Smoke & Barrel: Zechs Marquise, St. Anthony, A+ Setup
US Pizza Co: John & Kevin

Gosh I feel old for being only 27… I’m a musician that still listens to new music and I appreciate quite a bit of indie music, but I never cease to be amazed at what “cool” people call good (no offense, Todd).

@Me, None taken. Also, whoever told you I was “cool” was sorely mistaken. Just yesterday I got in trouble for taking photos at the Razorbacks’ football practice. Talk about feeling like a lame-o. I do, however, think Zechs Marquise sounds pretty awesome. But that’s just my opinion.

Todd, I think you’re totally “cool”
In the same way I think Me was being a “self-righteous prick”

@ Boggy – I don’t mean to sound like a self righteous prick… in fact I was trying to be self-depricating. I feel old because I have become more and more out of touch… I try to get it, but fall short sometimes (especially like today when I went by Hot Topic in the mall to look for a gift). Everyone is entitled to their opinions so I was just giving mine.

Yeah, well, wait until you turn 40, and you go to a “cool” concert at George’s and one of your “young” acquaintances asks, “What are YOU doing here?”

I hear you mischki! I’m just too young to call myself old and too old to call myself cool at this point!
