Weekend: August 14, 15, 16

Besides the fact that we’ve got a huge music festival going on less than 45 minutes away this weekend, or the fact that there are a ton of great shows in Fayetteville as well, where else can you find a dog party, a make-out party, an ice cream party, and a roller derby bout and demolition derby just down the road in Springdale all in the same weekend?

Nowhere. That’s where.

Tonight, if you like tunes, you could head down to the Mulberry Mountain for the Harvest Music Festival. There, you could see Railroad Earth, Tea Leaf Green, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and the Avett Brothers, among others.

If you like hip-hop, I’d head over to the Smoke and Barrel for Bizar, EQ, Rockst*r, and Fayetteville’s own Lucio. According to Lucio, Rockst*r is one of the biggest names in the Little Rock hip hop scene right now, and there are some good rappers in Little Rock.

Also tonight, Arts Live Theatre’s ALTY Awards are at the UARK Bowl. It’s a big deal to those kids, and you can put on your tuxedo/fancy dress for this one if you want.

Tomorrow’s gonna be nuts.

First, Farmers Market. This is the prime season for the Farmers Market and delicious vegetables.

Then, find someone to make out with. The Fayetteville version of the The Great Nationwide Kiss-In, an event to raise awareness of continuing discrimination against same-sex couples, happens at 1:00 pm on the square.

After that, there’s a dog party on Dickson St., for the first ever Take Your Dogs to Dickson event. Take your dogs down there.

At 4:00, the Burning Chair Readings begin at the new location of 4 Square Fine Art Gallery. Samuel Amadon, Stephanie Anderson, Tom Andes, Robert J. Baumann, Tim Earley, Jennifer Jabaily, Friedrich Kerksieck, Don Lee, and Karl Saffran will be reading their work.

Also at 4:00, there’s an ice cream social at the Headquarters House, home of the original Jonah Tebbetts.

Saturday night there are two very different types of derbies in Springdale, with a Demolition Derby at Parson’s Stadium in Springdale, and Roller Derby with the NWA Roller Girls taking on the Green County Thunder Dolls at Roller City.

There are three sweet rock shows Saturday night in Fayetteville as well. The Rox are releasing their CD at the Smoke and Barrel with The Good Fear and Egyptr.

Apartment 5, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, Messy Sparkles, and Memphis Pencils are at George’s, and there’s a roller derby after party at the Gypsy with Hosta, The Valentine Failures, and DJ SweeNES.

If you are still ready to party on Sunday, you can check out Randall Shreve at the 21st Amendment on Sunday night, and there’s a Harvest Festival after party at George’s with My-Tea Kind, Randy Crouch, The Lost Pines.

Whew. That’s a lot. What are you guys doing this weekend?
