New animal shelter superintendent hired
The City of Fayetteville announced yesterday that Justine Middleton has been hired as the new superintendent for the Animal Services division.
Middleton is a recent graduate from the University of Arkansas, and was selected by a three-member committee from over 23 applicants who applied for the position.
“We are excited about Ms. Middleton’s decision to accept our offer of employment, and we look forward to utilizing her skills to assist the city in driving toward a ‘best in class’ animal
services program,” said Community Services Director Yolanda Fields.
Of the applications received, 19 were from the Northwest Arkansas area, two were from
outside the area but within Arkansas, and two were from outside the state.
Middleton’s salary for this position is $50,325.
The previous superintendent, Jill Hatfield, was fired last month along with coordinator Mitzi O’Dell and caregiver Jerry Lennox following an investigation into complaints about the shelter’s euthanasia practices.
Although the firings were unrelated to any euthanasia procedures, the probe uncovered evidence of bad management, and in Lennox’s case – harassment of other shelter employees.
Northwest Arkansas Times‘ Robin Mero reported today that Christina Mere was also recently hired as a replacement for the position left by O’Dell.
