Those bars, restaurants and hotels generate more sales tax for Fayetteville than you’d think. If its only a money issue, the rally’s are worth it and Fayetteville happens to be short of cash.
It seems that this is a carachter issue though. Clearly, both rallys are lame. Anyone can see why its shallow and far from funky.
Why should a line be drawn here though? We whore it up for BBBQ and any corporate sponsorship of the “arts”. We allow and build luxury condos to overlook our new, old-looking architecture. Not to mention countless other marketing strategies centered on our “Funky” roots. All to attract more young professionals (yuppies), bikers, hippies, gays, entertainers, developers, basically anyone with a disposable income.
Well this is not really that different.

All these bike rallies do is alienate the citizens of Fayetteville. During BBB you can’t drive anywhere due to closed off streets and traffic, the noise is awful, and even some local small businesses have to close during the event because their regular paying customers can’t get there. Isn’t the whole reason it exists is to bring money into the local economy? It seems to exclude everyone that is a part of the local economy except bar and hotel owners. It’s already bad enough that we have to endure this 3 or 4 days out of the year, and having another rally is a mistake. If the whole reason to have this is to appeal to women, why not try to incorporate women into the original BBB instead of making thousands of people suffer through more motorcycle rallies?

A couple of us Alderman are considering action to prevent this event, which was originally supposed to be a car show.

If you want something to happen, you need to speak up in other places. Email your thoughts to the City Clerk and ask that she forward them to the entire Council. ssmith@ci.fayetteville.ar.us

I gotta say I’m with Lawrence and Matt Petty on this one. This just seems superfluous to me. Also, “Bikes, Babes and Bling”? Seriously? That’s just awful.

BBBBQ is just a giant costume party. Most of them get back on their bikes and head back to their 40 hr a week jobs when its over.

@jrily: Links? I could say the average female motorcyclist is fat, thrice-divorced, has at least 6 visible tattoos, doesn’t have a GED… and part of an event that has never raised a damn dime for anything. And that last part is indisputable since we have no event yet.

The average female motorcyclist is in her mid-40s, married, and a professional with a college degree. Real trashy, especially when raising money for local charities assisting women and children – very dark indeed.

In reference to giving money to “jump start” the Bikes, Babes, and Bling event:

I gotta say…this is one of the dumbest ideas I have ever heard. And finding out this way that the Fayetteville A&P gave out $20,000 for this event is even more revolting. Where was the public forum? Any votes? Or was this a favor for a “friend”? If Fayetteville really wanted to boost the economy so that it can FINALLY FIX THE ROADS IN THIS TOWN, then I say put in a FAMILY ORIENTED business, like a Six Flags or something here. The revenue would be all season long instead of one (dumb) event. A Six Flags would pull people from Tulsa, Joplin, Springfield, Fort Smith, Little Rock, etc., etc., etc. I sure would have suggested this if there would have been a FORUM before the funds were donated. All they’re going to do with this trashy event is make Dickson EVEN DARKER.
