To-do: Wednesday 12/2
You’re probably reading this to-do post on a mobile phone right now so I’ll make it snappy. Wait…what? Oh, sorry! I guess I mistakenly assumed you were all standing in line at Sam’s Club waiting to get Sarah Palin’s autograph between 11 am and 2 pm tomorrow.
There’s plenty happening tonight.
In the mill district, 3 Penny Acre is playing Greenhouse Grille while just around the corner at Heartwood Gallery, there’s a Progressive Shopping Party which appears to involve limousines that will pick you up and take you to 11 different stores around town to do some holiday shopping.
Word on the street is that the Shout Lulu square dancing party last month was great. If you loved it, head back over to Scarpino’s tonight for more. If you missed it, go for it!
Smoke and Barrel Tavern hosts Jeff Kearney this evening. (Trivia: Did you know that the Wired writer who tried to vanish back in August, ended up hitching a ride with Hermit Thrushes who came through Fayetteville and played at Smoke & Barrel on the 25th? There was a $5K reward for finding him. So close…)
Over at Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall, the University of Arkansas Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble will be performing pieces by Mozart, Brandon, Frank, Gounod, Barber, Daugherty, and Berlioz. Free parking in the parking deck and free admission for those interested.
George’s has Rehab which Wikipedia calls “a mixture of southern rock, dirty south rap, reggae, alternative and the popular 90s rock/rap style (made famous by bands such as Limp Bizkit).” So there you go.
Le list:
- JJ’s Grill n Chill: Mo Brothers
- Smoke & Barrel Tavern: Jeff Kearney
- Ella’s: Jazz on the Hill
- Grub’s: RockBand karaoke
- Jose’s: Karaoke
- George’s: Rehab, Soul Stash, Almost Kings
- Greenhouse Grille: 3 Penny Acre
- Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall: Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble Concert 7:30 pm
- Teatro Scarpino: Shout LuLu square dancing

Hey, if you guys haven’t checked out the Wednesday night thing at Teatro Scarpino, you’re really missing out on a hidden gem! Jamey Hall (of Snake Eyes and the Bug Band) has been giving dance lessons! From 7 – 8 p.m., Jamey teaches a different dance step/type to the group, then from 8 – 10 p.m., there’s a live band to practice the dance steps!
So far I’ve heard that East of Zion and Wally’s Big Country Review (Wally Matthews and 3/4 of Cletus Got Shot) have played in addition to Jamey’s band, and now I see Shout LuLu is booked. It’s just a $5 cover at the door (which is for the band), and so far I think they’ve learned the Cajun One-Step, the Country two-step, the Walz, and maybe more (I’ve only been a couple of times). All ages are welcome (I’ve seen teenagers there as well as older people like me), there’s a full bar, it’s non-smoking, and the dance floor is wonderful. And for the bands, there’s nothing like having a full dance floor!
Sorry for such a long post! I’ve just never seen this advertised anywhere, and it’s really a great thing! Hope some of y’all can make it out tonight!

Last month’s square dance at Scarpino’s was a hell of a lot of fun, especially for someone who’s never squaredanced in his whole (considerably lengthy) life. Plus, Shout Lulu are always tons of fun.

I’ve squaredanced. I’m from Prairie Grove, though. Has anyone ever been to the Clothesline Fair square dance competition in PG on Labor Day weekend? It’s pretty awesome.

We had to take square dancing in P.E. in Jr. High. Weird, huh? I can’t even think of square dancing now without thinking of my soccer coach!
But these Wednesday things are not just square dancing…maybe just when Shout LuLu is there… but when other bands are there they do all sorts of stuff. It’s really neat!
Just trying to get the word out a little since, like I said, I never see any posters or advertising for it or anything…

Sarah Palin, in our town?! And just when we were starting to overcome the whole “dumb hillbilly” image, too. So close, I guess we’ll just have to start over.

Jamey Hall is a local treasure and y’all should get yourself out. If he’s involved it’s sure to be a hoot.
