Is there a LGBTQ Razorback fan club or Alumni club? If so, Gay Bacon would be a fine nickname.

I wish we had a gay themed tailgate party like they do in Austin for Longhorn games, rainbow flags and all.

And does the university license a rainbow razorback flag? If not, somebody should make one.

Any attempt to educate-- like any attempt to sell something-- is, effectively, saying "Look at me! look at me!" You had to look at algebra, chemistry, and English before you learned anything about them. Every one of the requests for funding is some organization's attempt to get people to look.

Integration does not happen without education. Sexuality will not be an integral part of the community until more of the community is educated. And this is not a question of forcing education on anybody; it is a question of providing opportunities for members of the community to become educated.

I agree with your statements about fear and understanding.

We kill what we fear...

And we fear what we don't understand.

It's not about "normal". It's about understanding no one has a choice regarding to whom they are attracted. Emotionally or sexually. And it's nobody's business. It doesn't make anyone a second-class citizen. Just because I'm attracted to small-statured males and not leggy, blue-eyed blonde females doesn't mean I'm flawed, or any less deserving of the same civil rights as anyone.

But it also doesn't mean I'm going to shove it in anyone's face either. Education is not jumping up and down yelling "look at me! look at me!" Education and understanding will come from being an integral part of the community. So when, or if, someone tries to make a point of your sexual orientation, it really is a non-issue.

Someday we can hope that humanity and respect will be foremost in our relationships. Not fear.

Fear is the mind-killer...

Just my opinion. To which their own everyone has the right.

And actually, events such as Lights -- which I love, BTW -- are pretty closely tied with a religious observance. Not everyone rolls that way. But I don't mind if you are proud of your religion and can manage a subtly endorsed government funding of it, as long as you keep it respectful of those who don't share those views.

That's the big difference in us libs... we are cool with your religion, your narrow views, etc. You just don't return the favor. And that is where we have a problem.

Just glancing through the list, I see that the Washington County Fair has asked for over $36,000 and Lights of the Ozarks has asked for $30,000. Both of these organizations are, I'm sure, banking on their normalcy as part of the justification for giving them funding.

Comments such as yours make it clear why the educational aspects of All OUT June are needed.

Let's get real... ALL of the organizations that request A&P funds are "special interest" groups. Whether its for the arts, cancer, bling, or gay bacon all of these groups are advocating for/against something which means there will be someone oppossed to the idea. So the real question isn't do I (or even the majority) agree with the mission of the organization requesting funds, but rather does the application meet the requirements and will the proposed event promote Fayetteville? The funds are supposed to be used as "seed" money for events that promote the City. Well, in my opinion All OUT June is one of the best examples we've seen in quite some time of doing just that. The organizers will be specifically targeting regional attendees (as I stated above) to come here to spend their dollars. Many of you are making judgments (about the type and frequency of events) without any knowledge of the actual proposal. The month will include a variety of different events that will culminate in a parade and huge 'block style' festival in downtown Fayetteville. How does this NOT fit in with the purpose of the A&P funds?

Something I've never understood... people who truly admire the idea of America should know that freedom of speech and expression are core concepts. I don't like what some people say. I'm grateful to live in a country that allows everyone to say what they want, though. I think we've got an awful lot of hate in this country... but you have to take that as the cost of freedom. People can express their hate for gays, brown people, women and their rights to their own bodies, legitimately born presidents, progress... because we are free.

The Tea Partiers are right-wing wackjobs IMO. But I have a right to say that and feel that. And they have a right to espouse their seditious views as well.

That's why I love this country. You're free to be as idiotic as you want, so long as you allow everyone else that freedom.

I tell you, Fayetteville in the 70s was much more tolerant and cosmopolitan than it is today, no comparison. There were Miss Gay Fay. pagents at George's, Miss Gay Arkansas pagents at the old MtnInn. And everyone went, from fratboys with their dates, to ladies in waiting. Even if some went to laugh, it just wasn't nasty or threatening...and thos laughing might just wind up with Miss Gay Tulsa sitting in his lap. There were wonderful parties at the old Red Lion where gay & straight had great times together. It was a blast with none of this nasty mean-spirited vibe directed at the gay community. Lots of subcultures found a place to co-exist back then. May it be so again.
