Thursday To-do: April 15

  • by Todd Gill, Flyer Staff
    on April 15, 2010 at 6:07 am

Today is April 15 and that means two things: 1) It’s tax day. 2) Uh oh.

Yup, you’ve got exactly (insert amount of hours between now and 5 p.m.) hours to get to the post office to have your tax forms post marked for today.

Or you could file an extension. Your choice.

One of our upcoming Flyer Profile bands, The Bobby Drivers, is playing at George’s tonight for the Heifer International benefit show. The show is free but donations are encouraged. Also scheduled are The European Sons, Opal Fly’s Electric Feel Good Cirkus, and the Fayetteville Funk Ensemble.

The UARK Bowl has another installment of Effron White‘s Songs in the ‘Ville. This time, Butch Morgan (San Antonio, TX), Bill Erickson (Talequah, OK), and Jubal Lee Young (Muskogee, OK) join the round with Effron.

Aside from that, newly-solo Shannon Wurst is at Mellow Mushroom, Jovan Arellano shows off a newish project at Smoke & Barrel and Powerhouse begins another Party on the Patio season with Boom Kinetic.

Here’s the list:

Thursday, April 15, 2010
Botanical Garden of the Ozarks: Organic Gardening
Mellow Mushroom Pizza: Shannon Wurst / Rebecca Loebe
Fayetteville Public Library: Film Screening: Precious
UA JB Hunt Building: Palestine Film Festival 2010
Powerhouse: Boom Kinetic
JJ’s Grill n Chill: Russ Hutchinson
Pesto Cafe: Kevin Bennoch
Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall: UA Saxophone Ensembles Recital
UARK Bowl & Ballroom: Songs in the ‘Ville
Teatro Scarpino: Pura Vida
21st Amendment: Keith Nicholson

Don’t some post offices stay open later than five today to allow serious procrastination?

There’s a drop off at the facility on City Lake Road which is last collected at 7pm year round.

Don’t forget the Tea Party rally on the square at 11:00a.

Will there be toe-sucking, or just the usual unpatriotic, America-hating whining about taxes?

  5. Me says:
    Thursday, Apr 15, 2010 at 8:41 am

Why do they have the tea party while most tax paying citizens are at work?

  6. Dustin says:

@Kyle According to someone at the Dickson St. Post Office, they aren’t staying open late this year. You’ve got ’til 5:00 p.m.

It isn’t about paying taxes or not, it is about how much. Everyone would agree that 100% is way too much and is not patriotic. 0% is the rate for many which is fine by me. The issue is where you draw the line. I am in the 30% bracket which doesn’t include my property tax, sales tax, state tax, etc. I’m not complaining much about my situation, but I understand why those that are taxed higher are upset. You do have to draw the line somewhere, especially since those that pay 50% are really paying too much – regardless of how much they earn.

That last sentence was edited wrong but I think the point comes across.

Anyone want to go protest the tea partiers?

  10. Me says:
    Thursday, Apr 15, 2010 at 10:47 am

@ Milky Rather than protest the tea partiers, why don’t you just write a check out to the IRS? Since paying taxes is patriotic and you obviously don’t think you’re paying too much, maybe you can afford to donate a bit more and be even more patriotic?

teabaggers are almost a decade late, if they really wanted to protest big government where were these scumbags in 2002? i guarantee they will take all the government help they can get and then complain about having to pay for it. or complain about not getting a big enough refund. these people are the dregs of society. if it weren’t for the federal government these people would not be safe from the working poor, if they knew anything about history they would shut up and keep watching tv in the comfort of the suburbs.

  13. Innarested Observer says:
    Thursday, Apr 15, 2010 at 12:39 pm

If you like roads, schools, firefighters, cops, libraries… keep paying your taxes.

Tea partiers are unAmerican. What are they doing protesting in mid-day? They should be at work. The bums lost, Mr. Lebowski.

  14. George says:
    Thursday, Apr 15, 2010 at 12:43 pm

Roger is right (nice article btw). The last administration was reckless in their spending on crap that didn’t help anyone. The Tea Partiers didn’t make a peep. It’s not about taxes. It’s about having a Democratic admin and in some cases, but not all (don’t get your panties bunched up), it’s just a justification for racism.

There are so many reasons a graduated tax scale makes sense.

    @Me – If you’re paying 30% in federal income taxes then you’re making around $200k a year. Sorry if I don’t shed a tear.

i protest the tea partiers every day by being a reasonable human being

    What was in the briefcase?

Uh, uh, papers, um, just papers, uh, you know, uh, my papers, business papers.

And what do you do, sir?

    I’m unemployed.

  18. Me says:

@George: I was not asking for your pity and if you read my post, you’ll see that I’m not complaining about my 30%. I did not ask for you to shed a tear for me. I worked my *ss off to get to where I am now, I work my *ss off to stay where I am now, and I am proud of the money I spend in taxes. I don’t mind at all… if anything I feel it makes up for the fact I wasn’t paying taxes from age 16-26 because I wasn’t making enough money. I was just trying to point out that there is level above which taxation is un-fair. For federal taxes, the wealthiest get hit the hardest, but for overall taxes, the poorest are hit the hardest because of other tax burdens. The bad part is that both scenarios hurt the poor (either directly or by reduced spending/hiring by wealthy business owners).

  19. David Franks says:
    Thursday, Apr 15, 2010 at 1:46 pm

I don’t entirely hold with the “high taxes curtail spending” argument. In order to spend proportionally to income on a par with the poor, the wealthy wouldn’t have to reach a particularly high income before they have to spend frivolously and extravagantly. Most people who earn their wealth are too smart to waste their money like that.

The arguments of the TEA partiers– and a lot of conservatives– sound like they’re saying, “I’ll show you– I’m going to deprive myself because I don’t want to pay taxes.” The few people I know who actually follow through with that “logic” are at least a little crazy.

NPR just interviewed TeaPartyers at a Florida demonstration who were there to demand continued funding for NASA space programs. MORE TAXES for LOTS MORE SPENDING on a BIG GOVERNMENT program with lots of big military applications. There’s just very little coherence or consistency in the TeaParty movement and I’m really tired of hearing about them every time I turn on radio or tv.
