Wednesday To-do: May 12

It’s May 12 all over the world, and although most people would be able to tell you that if you asked them what day it was, I’ll bet very few know how May 12 got its name. Some would say it’s named that because yesterday was May 11 and tomorrow is May 13. Obviously, that’s just a conspiracy theory. May 12 comes from an event that takes place right here in Fayetteville tonight – Art Amiss 12. So don’t think it’s some kind of coincidence that Art Amiss 12 takes place on May 12. If anything, it’s the other way around.

If you’re up for another evening full of art and entertainment from the area’s up and coming artists, consider dropping $7 and heading to the Dickson Theater. Expect sculpture, painting, music, writing, fashion and more. If you missed Art Amiss 11, here’s your chance to make up for it.

But why stop there? For another $5 (that’s 5+7), you can cross the street and join the after party at FIX where L.A. based DJ/producer 12th Planet will lead what AIMT says “will be Northwest Arkansas’ undisputed biggest dubstep party yet.” Could it get any better? Of course it could. Epiphany and Bizar will be opening along with FIX residents EQ and Shortfuze. Could there be any more 12s? Maybe.

So what else is happening? Plenty.

In fact, before you head to Art Amiss, make sure to check out tonight’s release party for the Spring / Summer 2010 issue of the Wolf Review at Nightbird Books. They’ll have copies for sale, as well as t-shirts, tote bags, and a compilation of local musicians. Gary Sloan and Jesse Austin will bring the live music and Michael Heffernan, Sidney Burris, Ashley McHugh, Aran Donovan, and others will supply the readings. It’s conveniently scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. (what’s 5+7 again?) and in case you didn’t know, Nightbird Books is basically next door to Dickson Theater.

No art for you? Boo. OK, you just wanna hear some tunes? Fine.

Memphis Pencils, 3 Penny Acre, Scott Leeper and a half dozen more bands are playing in town tonight.

List:

Wednesday, May 12
Nightbird Books: Wolf Review Spring/Summer 2010 Release
Greenhouse Grille: 3 Penny Acre
JJ’s Grill n Chill: Mo Brothers
Dickson Theater: Art Amiss 12
Rogue: No Name Kicker / The Knowing Hand / Cass Harris
George’s: Memphis Pencils / Big Bad Gina / Jorian Oxygen / Snake Eyes & the Bug Band / Keith Grimwood
Smoke & Barrel Tavern: Scott Leeper
Fix Ultra Lounge: Art Amiss Afterparty: 12th Plane / Epiphany

Anyone know the stage times for bands at George’s tonite? Any more details about the theme would be welcomed. What I heard was Big Bad Gina and friends, playing a benefit for the Unitarian Universalist congregation. Looks like 4+ bands listed, I’m guessing all for the cause.

Up the other end of Dickson Street, Art Amiss is awesome. I support that too and may try to check out both events.

George’s tonight will have some rotating sets from Gina and Snake Eyes, with Keith Grimwood and (presumably) Jorian Oxygen somewhere in between. Memphis Pencils headline. I’m pretty sure all sets will be in the lounge.

It’s a big night on Dickson, hopefully everyone will plan ahead with some quality walking shoes and plenty of water.
