Remember the “tent city” that popped up on the University of Arkansas campus the week leading up to the Alabama game this year? The one that began on Monday, and by Friday night had stretched all the way from the student entrance of Reynolds Razorback Stadium to Pomfret Hall?

That’s not likely to happen again anytime soon, thanks to a new policy the university announced recently.

The new rules, which will be in place in time for Saturday’s Arkansas vs. Ole Miss game, state that camping will not be allowed until 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 21. Students wishing to camp must now register their tents and have them removed by 5:30 a.m. on game day.

Also, no camping will be allowed before the Snoop Dogg concert in Barnhill Arena Sunday, Oct. 24.

UA officials said the new rules have been put into place to “ensure the safety, security and well-being of students, the university community and the public, as well as safeguarding and preserving all university property and facilities.”

Registration? Student marshalls? Official “tent captains?” Gag. Way to groin something fun, spontaneous, youthful, and spirited with the knee of bureaucracy.

Love the Hogs, but loathe the institution. Jobsworth red tape like this permeated every step of my on-campus experience. There’s a reason I haven’t given them a hog-red cent since I escaped with my diploma.
