Fayetteville power outage: A raccoon did it. Again.

Nearly 4,500 Southwestern Electric Power Company (SWEPCO) customers in Fayetteville lost power Saturday night after a raccoon entered an electrical substation and climbed onto a power line.

Power outages caused by animals are not uncommon.

More than 7,500 SWEPCO customers were left in the dark last summer after a raccoon became tangled up at a substation in Springdale.

According to reports, animals are one the top causes of power outages, only behind fallen trees, vehicular accidents and lightning.
