Students at Asbell Elementary celebrate the school’s award of a $100,000 grant from the Target Corporation.

The possibility of Asbell Elementary School winning a $100,000 grant from Target and The Ellen Degeneres Show became a reality yesterday. The school held an assembly to celebrate the award. Cary Pollock, the district’s multimedia services coordinator, took some great photos of the event. Click here for a slideshow.

After 22 years on Block Avenue, GoodFolk Productions owner Mike Shirkey will soon be looking for a new place to host his folk, bluegrass, and blues performances. Shirkey, who also hosts KUAF’s “The Pickin’ Post” radio show, said that extensive repairs needed on the old house will require him to find a new home for GoodFolk.

After a slow start, the Arkansas men’s basketball team rallied to extend its undefeated-at-home season in a 56-53 win over Auburn Wednesday night in Bud Walton Arena. The Hogs travel to Tuscaloosa to face Alabama at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Country singer and 10-year Grand Ole Opry performer Elizabeth Cook is at George’s Majestic Lounge. Her latest album, “Welder,” includes a roster of impressive guests including Buddy Miller, Rodney Crowell and Dwight Yoakam. Amanda Cramer opens the 9 p.m. show. Admission is $10.

Also tonight, Wichita-based band Carrie Nation & The Speakeasy brings its eclectic blend of punk, bluegrass, dixieland, and circus tunes to Smoke & Barrel Tavern tonight. Springfield’s Honky Suckle will open the show. Music begins at around 10 p.m. and admission is free.
