The Fayetteville High School varsity and junior varsity basketball teams will play their final games in the school’s gymnasium on Friday, Feb. 24 when they each face the Springdale Bulldogs.

The gym is set to be demolished over the upcoming Spring Break period as part of a $93 million transformation of the school. A new competition arena is currently under construction in the southwest quadrant of the campus and is scheduled to be complete in time for the 2012-13 basketball season.

Pre-cast bleachers in the high school’s new competition arena can be seen from outside the southwest quad construction zone near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

Athletic director Barry Gebhart said he anticipates an overflow crowd for the final games and in preparation, has made plans to use the school’s auxiliary gymnasium to show a TV broadcast of the girls and boys varsity games for those who can’t find a seat in the main gym.

A brief ceremony and reception will be held at the conclusion of the boys varsity game to commemorate the last games in the facility.

“We want to invite all former Bulldog players, coaches, principals, administrators, cheerleaders, dance team members, managers, and anyone else who feels a connection to Bulldog basketball to join us on Friday night,” said Gebhart. “It promises to be a very special night.”
