UPDATED: 2012 Arkansas-LSU football game to be played in Fayetteville, Rutgers series official

  • by Todd Gill, Flyer Staff
    on February 17, 2012 at 10:51 am

Two key pieces of information regarding Arkansas’ 2012 football schedule were released by the university on Friday.

First up is the long-rumored return of the LSU game to Fayetteville for the first time since 1992. That’s right, the Hogs will face the Tigers at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium on Nov. 23 instead of playing at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock. As a replacement, fans in central Arkansas will see the Razorbacks face Ole Miss on Oct. 27.

“Playing the LSU game at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium directly benefits our program in a number of ways including most importantly providing an additional 20,000 Razorback fans an opportunity to cheer on our team and in this great rivalry game,” said athletics director Jeff Long. “By re-arranging the rotation and playing the regular season finale in Fayetteville, it will also prevent our team from a competitive disadvantage of traveling three straight weekends in the most crucial part of the season. Playing on campus will also allow our football program the recruiting advantage of hosting prospects for a game that has traditionally carried conference and national implications.”

Secondly, the unconfirmed home-and-home non-conference series with Rutgers was made official. The two-year series will begin with the Razorbacks playing the Scarlet Knights on Sept. 22 in Fayetteville. The Hogs will then travel to Piscataway, N.J. on Sept. 21, 2013. The series will mark the first time Arkansas and Rutgers have met on the football field.

“We are pleased to add a quality non-conference opponent like Rutgers to our 2012 football schedule,” said Long. “The additions of Texas A&M and Missouri and the delay in the release of the conference schedule posed some specific scheduling challenges for the 2012 season. We know that many other events around the state are contingent on the Razorback football schedule and we appreciate the patience of our fans as we worked through this process. In the end, we believe we have put together a competitive 2012 schedule for our nationally ranked football program and some exciting games for Razorback fans.”

The only detail left to fully complete the 2012 schedule is the location of the Texas A&M game.

2012 Arkansas Razorbacks Football Schedule

Sept. 1 – Jacksonville State (Fayetteville)
Sept. 8 – Louisiana Monroe (Little Rock)
Sept. 15 – Alabama (Fayetteville)
Sept. 22 – Rutgers (Fayetteville)
Sept. 29 – at Texas A&M
Oct. 6 – at Auburn
Oct. 13 – Kentucky (Fayetteville)
Oct. 20 – bye week
Oct. 27 – Ole Miss (Little Rock)
Nov. 3 – Tulsa (Fayetteville)
Nov. 10 – at South Carolina
Nov. 17 – at Mississippi State
Nov. 23 – LSU (Fayetteville)

Not that my opinion is to be trusted on this, but it seems that we have an easy schedule this year—disagree?

“a LITTLE easier than last year?” yes, because we don’t have to play the two BEST teams in the country at their place, and we pick up Kentucky. but “easy?” disagree.

An Ole Miss/LSU trade with Little Rock, yes please.

Oh man, I’m so damned excited about this I could tolerate an inane post from Hogs Guy. Wait, let’s not get carried away…

Thank you Jeff Long for not giving into the presure of Little Rock alums on the LSU game. Ol Miss will not be near as tough as LSU and with Louisiana Monroe that will not give up to much HOME feild advantage. Next year we need every bit of help we can get if we are going to win it all and we have the best chance of that I can remember! GO HOGS

LSU for OM, you betcha!! I have long thought that we were giving away a huge home field advantage by playing LSU in Little Rock. Granted, War Memorial is insane for a late game, but a mid-day game is just not quite the same. DWR will have the student section there and sorority and fraternity rows will be in full party mode and the taigating will be insane as well.

I almost hope that we play at Kyle Field this year so that we can get the Aggies here next season. I can’t wait until the season kicks off!!

    WPS!!!

Remember, that is Thanksgiving break, and most of the housing is closed. The student section may not be as big as you think.

There may be fewer students than normal, but the section will not be empty. The tickets will be sold.

LSU at Fayetteville on national TV?? Wow!
Now if SEC will move Alabama to East and Missouri to West we can have better regional games.

This is going to be a great decision for the Hogs. LR blows and you’ll probably get your car broken into while going to a game down there.

  12. William Heath says:

This was the right decision to move the Arkansas-LSU game from Little Rock to Fayetteville. Arkansas can
host football recruits, and Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium holds 20,000 more seats.

  13. Miracle on the Hill!!!! says:

What will we call a greatt play against LSU up in Fayetteville to win the game after they called the Miracle on Markham one (2002) and two(2008) against LSU in Little Rock. Any ideas out there for this coming season. That is the only thing missing compared to Little Rock War Memorial Stadium is a big game play against a top tier team like LSU or Alabama up in Fayetteville that people will remember.
The last big time play for a win up on the Hill was clint Storenor to Anthony Lucas in 1998 to beat Tennesse when they were ranked number 2 in the country at that time .
We got LSU and Bama to prove that Fayetteville can do it.

Stoerner to Lucas was 1999. Dickson Street partied like it after the game, too.
