Petrino had a passenger, Jessica Dorrell, during motorcycle crash

  • by Flyer Staff
    on April 5, 2012 at 4:29 pm

Jessica Dorrell

Arkansas head football coach Bobby Petrino was carrying a female passenger when he crashed his motorcycle on Sunday, according to an Arkansas Times post, citing the Arkansas State Police accident report.

Jessica Dorrell, 25, of Elkins, is listed as being on the back of Petrino’s Harley Davidson at the time of the incident. Dorrell, a former Arkansas volleyball player, was recently named as the student-athlete development coordinator for football.

The news conflicts with a statement from the Petrino family which came in a release from the University of Arkansas claiming the accident “involved no other individuals.”

When discussing how he arrived at the hospital, Petrino said on Tuesday, “Well when I came out of the ditch there was a lady there that had flagged down a car.”

Presumably, the “lady” was Dorrell.

Dorrell was not injured in the accident and according to the police report, drove away in her own vehicle after she and Petrino were taken to meet an Arkansas State Trooper at the corner of Huntsville and Crossover roads. The officer, Lance King, then drove Petrino to a hospital.

If, as the emerging details seem to imply, Ms. Dorrell’s car was at the intersection of Huntsville and Crossover Roads, why was it there? What circumstances other than a lovely afternoon for a motorcycle ride led the family to release an inaccurate statement? Why is the commander of one of the eleven primary divisions of the State Police providing personal security– and, apparently, personal favors– for a football coach?

“Petrino was met there by Capt. Lance King, an Arkansas state trooper who serves as his security detail during football season, and transported to Physicians’ Specialty Hospital in Fayetteville. King is also the commander of Arkansas State Police Troop L, based in Springdale.”

i’m curious: how much money have you donated to the Razorback Foundation in the past 4 years?
this has nothing to do with his job, and involves no illegalities. so why should he be fired?

      • Morgan says:
        Thursday, Apr 5, 2012 at 6:15 pm

Not a dime nor would I ever consider donating. That’s got nothing to do with the fact the man draws a salary based, in part, on tax dollars. He is a public employee. He just perpetrated and participated in a giant of a whopper to the media and public. Even if we extend him the courtesy of believing he didn’t have anything to do with the statement that no one else was involved in the accident he certainly knew that wasn’t the case and let that bald faced lie stand without correcting it. It’s insulting and seems pretty indicative of his character. If he is capable of telling a lie of that magnitude, and stupidity, I don’t feel like supporting his paycheck nor should any other taxpayer. Of course you and his fans will say “Oh but look at how much Razorback football brings in to the university and town.” Yep, sure does. That’s what big business is supposed to do. Petrino is not Razorback football and the cash cow might limp a little for a short while but don’t fear, she isn’t going to drop dead.

And actually I don’t know if there weren’t any illegalities involved. I will have to check into the definition of leaving the scene of an injury accident and then see if the woman was in fact uninjured. As someone else pointed out I will also be curious as to how he got picked up by a police officer for transport to the emergency room versus having to drive himself or take, and pay for, an ambulance like the rest of us.

        • five by five says:
          Thursday, Apr 5, 2012 at 8:12 pm

if a police officer, or any other human being, decides to pitch in and take another human being to the hospital, it is hardly a crime. leaving ‘the scene’ to seek medical attention, rather than sit on the side of the road in BFE is not wrong either. what a person does crime-free in his/her free time is that person’s business, not yours. he is employed to do one thing — coach football, at which he is hellagood. the majority of his income is derived from private donations.

lumping sports fans in with those who seek to deny equality to others: that’s an idiotic statement. i am a very outspoken proponent of equality & helping those in need. sports is a diversion or hobby; i do not seek to deny you your diversions — as long as they do not impede the quality of life to other persons — yet you criticize & seek to deny mine. hypocrite, much?

        • Innarested Observer says:

That’s rich. You criticize Brantley; but since it was you then I guess it was ok. I think you might want to consider a name change to zero by zero. You also cite your problem with Brantley stating facts as risking setting back our football program! My advice is to get some… ANY… perspective. This is about a lot more than a football program. But in so doing you personify PRECISELY the lack of reason that allows these situations to occur with this coach and the last one and even more player indiscretions.

Whatever, Zed. Internet tough guys/trolls don’t scare me much. Despite my better judgment, I’ve decided to try and enlighten you one last time. I’ll try and use small words:

          1) You did indeed criticize Brantley and accused him of doing something to harm your beloved football team. When actually, he’s just reporting the news. Look up “shooting the messenger.” He’s just reporting the facts, something Mr. Petrino wanted no part of. Let the truth be known and things will sort themselves out. Can you handle the truth?
          2) So for the record, since the only thing you did there was bash Brantley, I did indeed respond to the “single thing” which, in fact, was the only thing. With me so far?
          3) As for your second diatribe, turning your attack on me for my a) lauding of Brantley’s attempt to shed more light on the case and b) asserting that a lot of people who don’t like the truth to be told also hold other views I hold loathesome… (Oooo… big word. Just say, I don’t like it. No sir, I don’t.) Anyway, people who would attack anyone for telling the truth are stupid. They just are. The truth is never a bad thing, even if it’s unpleasant. It’s what we strive for. Jesus didn’t tell lies, it’s claimed.
          4) You’ll have to point out where I sought to deny anyone your diversions, except from reality. That, you should avoid. So the hypocrite thing doesn’t fit. Do you even know what that word means? Sports is indeed a diversion, I like them very much. So nothing hypocritical there. WPS! Just, WPS with someone who’s not a liar and a fake. Don’t know if we’ve had a football coach like that since Kenny left.
          5) When you actually have something relevant, I’d love to hear it. But right now you’re zero-for-three.

Frankly, it doesn’t matter. The incident was a private episode and the machinations will play-out as such. To be sure, the direct involvement with the Highway Patrol will be investigated. To roll-out such umbrage and festoonery against a College Football Coach is silly. As a culture and country, we have bigger fish to fry. Everything about this situation stinks, but if you gutted it through the Bush Jr. years this should be a small bolus to swallow. If your sense of indignation flares suddenly with this, then you might need to check your sensibilities. Infidelity is not uncommon nor is it illegal. There is nothing new here. Absolute power corrupts . . .

I say we keep him. For sure: shake the pediments! Rustle your chains! If we go some other direction it will be towards a worm in sheep’s clothing.

    • Innarested Observer says:
      Friday, Apr 6, 2012 at 7:44 am

Those who, like you, focus on the issue of infidelity miss the point entirely. The PTB at the UA could not give two craps about the infidelity. What they’re worried about is the ethical/legal risk they’re now exposed to because Coach Badass appears to have been boinking an employee — an employee he hired only days before. In every company in America that has more than one employee, this is called sexual harassment/abuse of authority, whether the relationship was completely consensual or not. The UA now in a bind and this will not end well.

      • Morgan says:
        Friday, Apr 6, 2012 at 8:17 am

I agree with you in that it is a serious problem that bobby was boinking a subordinate employee. But I disagree that it’s the only real problem here. The man’s integrity, or lack thereof, is just as big a problem. Remember, this is the same coach who left the Falcons high and dry and without so much as the courtesy of an explanation. He lied to that team when he told them he was resigning and would be back to speak with them about it. He lied to the media and the rest of us regarding this incident, more than once. He lied to his wife and family apparently, assuming he presented himself as a faithful husband. He lied to his employer, be it outright or failure to disclose and correct false impressions. He lied. Repeatedly.

How do you move forward with that lack of integrity and honesty in a position such as his? How does that person recruit high school kids when he has to sit down with their parents to convince them to send their sons to U of A and the hogs? You don’t or at least you shouldn’t.

Yes, if it was just the infidelity then I would think he gets shamed as he is a public figure and it’s what he signed on for knowlingly. I wouldn’t suggest he get fired for that transgression alone although if I had any respect for the man I would lose some of it at that point. It is certainly going to be interesting to see how the University responds.

        • Innarested Observer says:
          Friday, Apr 6, 2012 at 8:40 am

Morgan, obviously many transgressions from BMFP… pathological lying to your family, your employer, the media, etc… at least one infidelity (whether with Miss Dorrell or others… we do not know)… and others (captured on film cursing out Les MIles, deservedly or not, etc etc)… but all of those are ETHICAL failings. The LEGAL failings are the ones that the UA have to be very, very careful with.

If she was a member of the faculty… the daughter of a wealthy booster… even a student, people would be more willing to let this slide, but as an EMPLOYEE hired just a few days before this joyride, it’s bad bad bad.

Truly I feel for all involved, even Petrino, whose stupidity in this mess should give even the most ardent followers pause. Jessica Dorrell’s life is ruined in the near term. Regardless of the public denouement for her, her only choice is going to be leaving the state in shame (and, I bet, with a fat parting gift with significant cash value). Her poor cuckolded fiance will soon move on; the embarrassment for that young man has to be off the charts. And Petrino… now the pious parents of DGB look completely validated. Negative recruiting is a fact of life in big-time football, and Petrino just solidified the argument against him by everyone competing for a prospect. How does Petrino respond now to parents who have been reminded by Saban, Miles, Malzahn, Stoops et al of all these moral slip-ups?

I think Petrino ruined it for himself, for Dorrell and Morgan, and worse, for the fans of the Arkansas Razorbacks. He’s got to go.

        • Morgan says:
          Friday, Apr 6, 2012 at 8:54 am

IA, okay I have to know….what does BMFP stand for? I am guessing it’s Mother F*****?

Aside from that, you are totally correct. I agree the U’s biggest concern at this point should be the legal liabilities he has exposted them to with his actions. I guess what I’m saying, is from my standpoint, the ethical ones are just as reprehensible. I would hope that even without the legal failings the U would see it’s way to firing him for the ethical failings. Both are homeruns as far as I am concerned.
