A public discussion regarding the upcoming Frisco Trail southern extension is set for 5:30 p.m. Monday, April 30.

The outdoor meeting will take place along Frisco Trail near the Prairie Street crossing behind Greenhouse Grille restaurant (see photo above or map below).

Plans call for a half-mile southern extension of the trail from its current dead-end point at Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to Walker Park.

Representatives from both the City of Fayetteville and project design firm Garver, LLC will be on hand to present the conceptual design, answer questions and take comments from the residents.

Display boards will set up to show the proposed trail alignment and examples of possible street crossing methods.

Following the discussion session, attendees may take a 45-minute walking tour of the extension route.

Snacks and refreshments will be provided.

For more information call trails coordinator Matt Mihalevich at 479-444-3416.

A crosswalk on south school is going to take someone’s life. I drive that road every day, and pedestrians have trouble crossing now even at the full intersection of south school and 15th. It needs a tunnel or a pedestrian overpass.

That said, I’m looking well forward to this. I can almost ride my bike to work when this goes up, very happy.

Not to derail but is there a plan for connecting the west side of Weddington across I-540 in a safer manner than the existing 1.5 ft of sidewalk on the bridge? A cantilevered sidewalk seems possible. I realize there are more pertinent safety issues with the trail system but it seems safe to assume there is more foot/bike traffic at that particular crossing than in some other spots throughout the trail.

Yeah, there’re planning a connection at the Porter exit. Its tied to the trail construction over by Garland where they just put the tunnel in at the UofA agri park. There was a map of it on one of the old posts. Its a little further down than weddington, but will connect west side of 540 to the larger trail system.

Making pedestrian commuters walk an extra three miles is an excellent way to encourage and support alternative transportation. A trail which requires a commuter to and an extra hour to their morning commute to work isn’t an acceptable alternative to widening the sidewalk on the Wedington bridge. Yes, the bridge upgrade may be cost prohibitive at this time, but we should not make any claims that the Porter road trail is an acceptable alternative. That would be like telling someone on the square that they should be happy to drive west on MLK, turn north on 540, and then go east on Wedington in order to get to Evelyn Hills shopping center.

Jerry, if you live west of I-540 you are a second rate citizen anyhow.
