News Briefs

Wilson Park Pool

It’s already getting hot out there. Luckily, The Wilson Park pool will open to the public at 4 p.m. on Friday, June 1.

The 2012 Arkansas New Play Festival is set for this weekend (May 18-20) at Nadine Baum Studios. Here’s more information about it.

The Block Street Block Party is going to be enormous this year. Over 40 bands, DJs, and folk acts are scheduled to perform, and around 100 vendors and community groups will line Block Avenue on Sunday to join the 30-ish awesome local businesses providing activities on the street. Here’s our guide to all the madness.

Friday events, May 18

Charliehorse. Photo: Jeremy Scott

As our friend Dgold pointed out, the new outdoor stage area at Kingfish “has been kickin’ lately.” That kickin’ continues Friday night with local favorites, Charliehorse.

Folks who show up to George’s Majestic Lounge looking for dancing outlaw Jesco White might be disappointed. Or they might be pleasantly surprised. Jesco cancelled, but we’re guessing there will still be some hillbilly dancing to the sounds of Mountain Sprout. Full House kicks off the night during happy hour.

Full Friday list:

Fresco Cafe & Pub: Tommy Nolen

Chasing Pictures

Get some flowers for yourself at the Farmers’ Market on the Fayetteville Square Saturday. They’ll make your house smell better.

Remember that “Pup crawl” we told you about? It’s happening on Dickson Street Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m.

There are a ton of bands at George’s Saturday night, including Rocker Lips, The Radio Sky, Kingsdown, The Victor Ship and Chasing Pictures.

JR’s Lightbulb Club has a rock show with Lincoln, Neb. band Universe Contest and locals The Inner Party. We talked to The Inner Party guys last week. Here’s what they said .

The best name for a bluegrass punk band that we’ve ever heard is Filthy Still and it just so happens that they’re playing at Smoke & Barrel Tavern Saturday night.

Does anyone know where one might obtain one of the sweet Block Party posters pictured above? I saw it framed in a business on Block and it looked pretty snazzy.

Those prints will be for sale at block party, as will a limited edition signed screen print of the image!

Thank you so much for mentioning the Will Johnson house concert. Townies may recall that Will Johnson played a solo show with David Bazan at the Dickson Street Theater several years ago that was well-attended. The East Hall show will be WAY more intimate. Will played the same venue last year and it was superb. Tickets are only $20. You can purchase your ticket for the show here:
    http://www.undertowtickets.com/product/will-johnson-living-room-show-fayetteville-ar-may-20

Also, if you want to hear what Will Johnson sounds like, they are offering a free 24 song sampler of Will’s band Centro-matic” here: http://centro-matic.bandcamp.com/album/24-songs-free-download

I hope some of you will consider coming!!

Got my tix for Will Johnson (Centro-matic, South San Gabriel) in a rare Recording Studio set. Thanks for the heads up Fayetteville Flyer.

See you at the show (after some Block Street Block Party pre-partying).
