A widening project that will expand Interstate 540 from four to six lanes between Wedington Drive and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard begins this week.

APAC-Central Inc. of Fayetteville announced planned closures of the left lanes for northbound and southbound traffic between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. through the next several months.

The $5.8 million-project will add a third lane to each side of the 1.4-mile section of road.

According to a news release issued by the Highway Department, increased traffic enforcement is planned for the work area.
