Citizen scientists, rejoice. It’s time for another Secchi Day on Beaver Lake.

The annual event, organized by Beaver Water District, equips volunteers with Secchi Disks which are devices that are lowered into the lake to measure the transparency or clarity of the water. This measurement, when collected over time, is an indicator of the water quality in the lake which is pretty important considering that Beaver Lake is the source of our drinking water.

New activities are in store for this year’s event, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at Prairie Creek, five miles east of Rogers on Hwy. 12.

Aside from taking water samples, those attending can learn about fish at the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission’s mobile aquarium and can challenge their knowledge of water science in an onshore scavenger hunt.

Other activities include boat tours, a bird walk, a photo contest and free lunch.

Volunteer teams will depart from various locations around Beaver Lake beginning at 8:30 a.m., but anyone is invited to attend the host of other activities beginning at 9 a.m. at the east and west shelters at Prairie Creek.
