Washington County Sheriff Tim Helder yesterday introduced Tyler McCartney as the county’s new assistant fire marshal. McCartney began the new job on Aug. 27.

A life-long resident of Washington County, McCartney was raised in Springdale and is a 2009 graduate of Springdale Har-Ber High School. He attended Northwest Arkansas Community College and graduated in May 2012 with an Associate of Applied Science in Fire Science Administration and Technology degree. He currently lives in western Springdale and is an active volunteer firefighter for the Wheeler Rural Fire Department, a position he has held for three years.

McCartney has just completed the Washington County Sheriff’s Office Part-Time II Officer Course and is scheduled to attend the National Fire Academy in Emmetsburg, Md. to study Fire Arson Origin & Cause Investigation.

According to Helder, McCartney has already taught 1,738 children in area schools about fire safety since accepting the new position.

“I am pleased to have Tyler on board,” said Helder. “He brings with him a passion to serve and a desire to learn all aspects of the job. In the short time he’s been here, Tyler has already proven to be a great asset to us and to the community we serve.”
