News Briefs

Arvest Bank associates, Chamber of Commerce officials, and Fayetteville Mayor Lioneld Jordan helped break ground on a new 6,250-square-foot bank branch.

Cold temperatures, snow flurries, and strong winds kept a groundbreaking ceremony for a new Arvest Bank short and sweet Thursday morning. The new 6,000-square-foot branch, located at the corner of College Avenue and Township Street, will nearly double the size of the bank it will replace a few blocks south at 1946 N. College Avenue.

Fayetteville police are searching for a woman who they say robbed a Walgreens store at 2750 E. Mission Blvd. on Wednesday.

The Razorback Baseball team will start their 2013 season ranked No. 1 in the country, according to the recently released Collegiate Baseball preseason top 40 poll.

Friday events, Dec. 21

The Nutcracker

There’s a better than average chance that your boss might let you leave work early today because of the holiday coming up next week. If you’re not traveling to grandmas, or anything, maybe a happy hour is in order. George’s has Belairs starting at 6 p.m., and you might get a glimpse of George’s brand new, massive stage in the garden. Later on, Conway band Don’t Stop Please and locals Tyrannosaurus Chicken will perform.

If you are reading this post, it’s safe to say that the world did not end, and that earth and its people still exist. If that is the case, then there’s still a “Suck It, Mayans” show at Smoke & Barrel Tavern featuring local DJ, Shortfuze.

It’s the second-to-last weekend to check out TheatreSquared’s Period of Adjustment at Nadine Baum Studios, if you haven’t already (or if you’re like our reviewer Tobias Wray, and you want to see it again.)

Also in holiday show news, there are a few chances to check out The Nutcracker at Walton Arts Center this weekend.

Full Friday list:

2 p.m.  Fayetteville Public Library: Holiday Movie Fest
9 p.m.  Smoke & Barrel Tavern: Suck It, Mayans! w/ Shortfuze

GUTA

If you want to see some serious guitar playing Saturday night, check out Jimmy Thackery and Earl Cate at George’s Majestic Lounge, performing with saxophone man Dave Renko and RJ Mischo on the harp.

Also in guitar playing, there will be some on display at Smoke & Barrel Tavern as well Saturday night with locals, GUTA. Update: Looks like Mixx Tenn is at Smoke & Barrel Saturday night.
